1) No government official was hurt or arrested during or after the coup. 2) Multiple "plotter" F16s were within shooting distance of Erdogan 3) Erdogan had serious beef with the Constitutional court for condemning his arrest of two journalists-- saying so much as "I hope the constitutional court would not again attempt such ways which will open its existence and legitimacy up for debate". Following the coup, over 188 "warrants" were drawn up to "purge" the court. 4) Most news reports on the violence, including the bombing of a police station, were false. Erdogan was seriously embarrassed by the Gulen movement, and was looking for a pretext to destroy that group and solidify his position.
Also, why the hell would you launch a coup at primetime, when everyone is out and about (9PM local) and not when everyone's asleep (5AM)?

I think he was aware of the plans of a possible coup due to acquired intelligence, but I don't think he orchestrated this himself, I also don't believe he 'exactly' knew when this was going to happen, but could only speculate.
