Only regret is I didn't start younger and waste money on college. Job isn't for everyone (it's a grind, especially during this season), but once you get past your first 40 days of eating shit you're union, and pretty much untouchable.

Why do all of these threads start with "executive/sous chef" at wendy's? If you're working fast food, you're not a chef. Stop kidding yourself. Look up what it takes to become one

Nope. Stroke of luck when I decided to get into tech, then about 8.5 years of eating shit, busting my ass, and bouncing around positions in one company and working upwards to sysadmin.
Made friends with a guy in the company who's a relentless climber (wants dat executive money) and he offered me a gig on his team because he needed someone with my skillset. Been doing it for about a year and a half now and I hope I never have to work in an office again.

>want to get into it without wasting too much time if it's possible
not possible. You have to let it consume you for a while at least, there is a lot to learn in the beginning and a career in the field means continuous learning and readjusting what you already know.
I personally had the job to encourage me to keep going in my spare time, otherwise I don't know if I would have made it purely on my own, but that's me.
I don't live it every day anymore because I've hit a point where I can learn what I need in the course of my work and my free time is spent getting stoned and playing videogames. The first few years, though, I was on a near daily grind to soak up as much as I possibly could though. Most important advice I can give isn't technical at all: be likeable.

Anyone of you fags know how to work for the glowniggers ? want to join an intelligence agency like the NSA. You need to be god-tier in IT ?

Fellow cyber security guy here. No degree.
Was always adept at innately understanding computer systems.

Was modifying linux kernels at age 14. Did a lot of slightly nefarious stuff, didn't realize the majority was considered hacking (finding null/user shares on the net, writing scripts to enum shit).

Later co-founded electronics company and taught myself how to write firmware in C. That coupled with getting a CISSP seemed to seal the deal. Earlier this summer I had 12 job offers within two weeks.

Yo doc, my dick hurt a bit when i'm hard and my veins started to pop up after long sessions of edging. You think i should go to an andrologist to check that out ? (went to a urologist and he said i was fine and it's the stress...)

I'm an introvert in strange company because of mild social anxiety and I did fine. Get to know your team and important lower level management and be likeable to THEM is what I mean. They're the ones who will vouch for you at other companies after they leave yours and the management folks will clear a path upwards for you if they like you and you're capable enough.

I worked in the main sort in wi. It's a rough job, had I started at 18 I probably would have never stopped tbh. Glad I'm out now though. Powder coated making 40k minimum with full benefits at 24

Bepsi merchandiser

you need to school 'god-tier IT' in a lot of shit. basically, you need to be on level of those giving lectures in blackhat / defcon events or better, at a minimum

>not possible.
Yep, what he said. You practically have to be born curious enough to tear stuff apart to see how things work.

A can't speak for this user, but I've seen shellcode in my dreams. Once people learn how much can be earned in this field, it does tend to attract people who are in it solely for the money, and that's slightly annoying. Definitely a consuming obsession.

Before developing firmware in C, I was a sysadmin for a few years, and did some network administration and GPO stuff.

Infosec is something else, where it takes a fairly deep understanding of multiple disciplines of IT to be considered "entry" the field, and that's why 1) the shortage gap (either real or implied), and 2) the salaries are higher than average.

Jacking for more than a few hours is straight up dick trauma. Just needs a lil rest. Go hospital if it turns purple.

I'm that user and I certainly haven't seen any code in my dreams, but I certainly have that obsessive personality trait where if I run into a problem I can't solve, I go at it like a dog with a bone, sometimes to the point of ragequitting for a while to reset my brain a bit.
I actually got into the field because of interest in tech, earning potential, and future job growth in that order. I'm actually "DevSecOps" though that's a bit tougher to explain to people and is also kinda made up, but the term is seeing more and more traction.

here. Interestingly, no joke, I was courted, multiple times, by some of these agencies, reportedly for the last company I helped create - we became a global market leader in our niche electronics field, and I was employee #3.

No degree, but these places love guys like me who can learn deep stuff on the fly. It's a long story. Once you have some level of practical provability, official credentials are waived.

The bad thing is, these USG agencies are competing for the same talent pool FAANGs are.

By school you mean going to IT college ? where i am they almost only teach math and the students graduate without real it knowledge. They got shit level tbh

Thx for the level reference btw

Parkour/gymnastics coach.
$20/hr for groups. $70/hr private lessons. I work 30hrs a week at the $20 rate, the rest of the time I'm allowed to do any private lessons I can set.

My background is psychology though and after a decade with my last company, I was only making $22/hr as a fucking teacher. I love what I do now. I get to run and climb and jump all I want, make bank, and Im surrounded by gymnasts. God bless lululemon pants and leotards.

Kinda got the same obsessive personnality as So you mean that i can Mr Robot for years and maybe develop some projects on the side (doing that right now but it's still in the egg) and i could be a at your level or at least hoping to reach it ? how do you attract companies in the first place without degree, like how they know you're The guy they need ?

For the infosec you think i can do it alone or need to go to a CS/IT college ?

You guys lurk a lot on this board or you're occasional visitors ? (Btw THANK you so much ! i'm a bit lost in my studies and stressed about the future so it's awesome to talk to you! )

Attached: 1544640002394.jpg (500x625, 81K)

not really IT college, no. We're talking minimum masters in mathematics, machine learning, data science, top-tier programs basically. also, see below

yah that could also happen. but you need someone who REALLY knows their shit. I mean you can learn some basic pentesting, try and get some of these bounties from companies, but that's not enough for these jobs. I'd imagine someone needs to actually know WHY these things work the way they do. I'm dumber than a gold fish when it comes to networking and exploits, and I hate webdev with every inch of my being, so I left the entire field because the only thing that was left for me (in my area) was cobol, and who the fuck does that shit for a career. didn't end up anywhere in programming, and still hate my life lol

Or psychology. Unless you have 10 years for school and a trust fund to get you a MD, PhD, or PsyD, the best you can hope for is tracking behaviors of assholes, having zero support from your admin, and being the enemy of everyone you interact with. Everything you say and think is wrong because everyone else who's never looking into your specialty before knkws more than you. You will be peed on, spit on, and probably shat on at some point. Enjoy hoping for $20/hr as a long term goal.
