Ghostbusters Box Office Results

So, would this be considered a success or a failure to you guys? I'm surprised this movie made this much considering all of the empty theaters posted during its premiere. Why is that?

M8 the budget was 144 million

Tickets cost $12.

Does that include advertising?

Technically, it would be considered a failure. Most movies with budgets that high are expecting to recoup a larger chunk in their opening weekend.

Also, given the poor word-of-mouth the film is getting, they can't rely on the audience to increase like many big budget films do. They may break even in 3-4 weeks, but everyone knows that's not actually 'breaking even'.

Big budget films can often bring in 4-5x as much as was spent. Then the toys, soundtrack, and franchise can generate even more money - if they're popular.

Nobody wants the toys. Nobody wants the soundtrack. Nobody wants merchandise. And nobody wants a sequel.

This is a failure.

not an expert on this stuff but that looks bad compared to budget and it's an actual bad movie that won't have a ton of staying power like other bad movies. seems like a bad performance considering all the publicity (albeit bad publicity) it got

irredeemably shitty movies are rarely huge successes so it had an uphill battle assuming it's as bad as it's supposed to be

>> $144mil budget (BEFORE MARKETING)
>> $65mil combined gross
>> #2 on opening week

By comparison, Fantastic Four had a production budget of $120mil and took in $59mil combined opening weekend.

So.......

Asked my chinese ex tonight what she thought of it based on previews as she's a movie connoisseur and she said it looks so stupid and glad it got negative reviews before it aired

>>Not knowing that directors will personally buy up tickets to ensure a sequel is made and so it doesn't look like a flop.

Who needs actual viewers when you can buy your way to a sequel?

It's neither.
Not really a flop but not profitable either

Nope, or merchandising which is already at the clearance price level.

That is a huge fucking failure m8
It never does

>4000 theatres.

I think breaking even is treated as a failure.

Production was $148M and I think marketing was $100M, so only making $65M is a flop for sure.

Millions of tricked Women went to watch it to show them evil Sexist Men

But quickly word of mouth got around from normal people who tried film out, so lets see how it does in following week

Won't stop CNN from hyping it though. Gotta keep it in the news. Gotta make it controversial.

LITERALLY SCARES UP VIEWERS!

You can't make this shit up

However -- The Asian market may save them, Asians love ghost shit.

>Star Trek/Ice Age/Bourne are all about to come out
>poor word of mouth

It is over

Although, they try to sneak a little bit of reality into the bottom of their article. You know, journalistic integrity and all that.

I have a perpetual motion machine I want to sell you.

>Nobody wants merchandise.
The funny thing is that old Ghostbusters merch is selling. I was at a toy shop that had these $20 old Ghostbuster figures next to the new ones. I asked them how they were selling and they told me that the old ones were selling okay, just a little here and there but they didn't have a large stock anyway.

But they said they had about 4 times as much for the new film, and hadn't sold a single item. Not one.

ITT: people who don't understand how movies make money. With the overseas market and DVD sales and premium downloads and all that this this movie will make a hundred million in profit easily. It's performing as they expected it to. And it's apparently mildly entertaining which is all that's required for a good run.

>With the overseas market

It isn't playing in China

Flop, didnt open no. Now ticket sales will fall for it after opening weekend. Doubt full to make its $144 plus whatever millions in marketing back.

Hahahahahahahaha

Let's look back at FF:

>> $25.6 million on its opening weekend, marking one of the lowest openings of all time for a big-budget superhero movie which box office analysts have attributed to poor critical reviews and audience reception.
>> Outside North America, the film grossed $33.1 million on its opening weekend from 43 countries from 8,996 screens, coming at second place behind Rogue Nation at the international box office

Meanwhile, GB made $19mil overseas. That's...almost literally nothing. This is a trainwreck.

Topkek before it even came out

thats awful considering the budget. we wont see another big budget sjw experiment for a while

ITT: People who don't know it's banned in China.

Why is this place full of Sony marketers?

>disable Adblock out of curiosity
>nonstop shilling for this movie on Facebook, both from the website itself and from movie theater pages and related pages
>ads for it on YouTube
>turn on TV
>more ads for it
>hop on Rotten Tomatoes/Flixster
>everyone thinks it's trash except for (((critics))) and a minority of women and numale cucks
>IMDB
>just barely at 5/10
Despite shilling their asses off for this movie, the average person still won't see it and thinks it's trash. Great job!

>it's another poster who doesn't realize nips hate feminism and 3d women

China has banned the film

huehuehuehuehuehue

It's an okay opening, but it definitely won't sustain itself. Between Ice Age and Star Trek expect it to fall to 3rd or 4th, doubt it'll break $20 million through the weekend.

sorry m8, this is not Sup Forums
let me help you

Sup Forums sucks, easily in the top 5 worst boards

>FF was more successful than Goybusters
Kek.

It's not being shown in China. Besides, that's a shitty argument. Even Deadpool, which had all the signs of being DOA, became a huge hit and broke records without China's money.

That's some impressive double-think.

Budget was 144million. To get the actual amount spent you double that, and this movie was shilled a lot so possibly more, you're looking at up to 300million spent.

>all the signs of being DOA
Huh? It's a superhero movie with "adult humor" and they marketed the everloving fuck out of it. It seemed destined to be a hit.

failure. generally a movie makes about 40-50 percent of its total revenue the first weekend.

no more cuntbusters

Kek.

Based gooks.

not all that money goes to the studio. Alot of that gross is cinemas and the like.

Why is this movie getting so much attention here? I don't get it, it's more than likely shit like nine out of ten movies made.

To be fair a lot of people weren't sure about the dead pool movie until word of mouth got out that it wasn't completely full of Facebook tier memes.

>marketing was free
>theatres don't take any money from the tickets
>breaking even = successful
>the intangible damaging of the brand is not relevant to a future sequel
>implying

It's the blatant agenda-pushing, not to mention the hijacking of a beloved franchise to push said agenda.

>It seemed destined to be a hit.

Not really since even they were surprised to see it become huge. It was rated R, not being shown in China, and it's a character most people aren't familiar with. At most they were expecting it to be a mild success, not an instant-sequel maker.

My wife spent my money to go see this trash with her girlfriends. Came back with glowing reviews and even suggested we rent it when it comes out on DVD. Yea, don't think so...

Trigger warning.

She's a basic white bitch. I'm black.

failure

would love to see their advertising budget total. They even had ads with nt football players during the euro intermissions. They probably spent more on ads than in the movie

GIRLS RULE GET OVER IT

>wife walking all over him like a cuck
>"btw im black shes white lel"
Yup, it's bait

It it's not profitable then it's a flop.

Be honest, how much longer do you think you're going to put up with her?

is China a big audience?
I thought they all pirated

Will it beat Mad Max domestically?

I checked some historical data and of the top 300 grossing movies, the average total gross averaged 3.3x the opening weekend rake. That puts this abortion at about $150 million, which is midway between actual production costs and net production costs due to incentives, tax breaks, etc.

So factor in that the $144-$154 mil doesn't cover marketing costs, which must be astronomical, and the likely $150 mil total gross is not net of distribution, theater cuts, etc., this one's a bomb.

Pro tip: the only kind of lesbians people don't loathe are the fake ones in porn.

they zerg rushed warcraft into profitability

You're thinking of Somalians

At this rate hell no. Expect lots of "features" on the DVD release to try and cut losses. I'm hoping for some cringeworthy bloopers and deleted scenes.

Well it's obvious trolling at the end there, but 100% true.

The first time she definitely says no to sex.

It's 2-0-1-6, senpai.

Laughably horrible writing in that excerpt.

>this turd won 6 oscars
amazing times we live in

But it was the best action movie of the last 10 years.

boxofficemojo.com/intl/china/yearly/

Funny you should say that

It was good though. Not "deserves 6 Oscars" good, but I can't think of a recent action movie that surpasses it.

I think I recall from another thread, that both Ghostbusters 1 and 2, adjusted for inflation, made more dough than Fembusters in their opening week. So we'd have to wait for the first week to be done before really calling it, but lets be honest, this movie is not going to make back 144 MILLION burgerbucks.

because literally nobody but feminists and their enablers want this movie.

The movie everyone wanted was Ghostbusters 3, and that would have made serious bank. But that died with Harold Ramis, and people accepted that there would never be a 3, only for this to get announced a year later, and to be a reboot, not to mention trying to play gender politics by being a "gurrrrl empowerment" movie, and shitting over all the accomplishments of the originals. Most egregious being that Winston was in the originals, the straight man to the other 3's oddness. The everyman. The average audience member stand in.

And meanwhile, Patty contributes to that by being a generic black stereotype. And also being just plain unpleasant to look at.

This pissed of about 3 entirely different audience groups that should have been it's target, and then made it worse by playing to the media's feminist angle about how only basement dwelling meninists hate the movie and if you criticize it you are a sexist. Which pisses off more people.

Those awards were all technical, weren't they?

>McCarthy's TRIGGERED face
>the sheboon's EXPAND DONG face
o I am laffin

This movie had an absurd amount of advertising and a fucking huge budget. If it weren't for the "controversy" surrounding it everyone would be calling it a flop by now.

There was no competition.
Next weekend is secret life of pets and the latest ice age.
Ghostbusters will make another 10 million then goto Netflix.

Sony said it needs to make back 500 mil to be a success

fucking how, the catering bill?

It's not that bad. It's just weird.

So how long until an article blaming straight white men comes out?

Nope, they spent another $100M on advertising. Kek

>ALL of the ballbusters toys are peg warmers, no exceptions

Liberals on suicide watch.

you should review movies. don't get fat or wear sweatervests, please.

because when you take away the ghostbusters nameplate, you get the exact same as every other would be franchise.

a would be franchise. tons and TONS of money dumped in big names, advertising and social media fuckery, and the hope to establish a franchise, with probably 2 or more sequels already written/planned. With a side of hopping off of an existing franchise as a reboot to try and get a new audience to feed that new franchise.

>(Estimate)

tinseltpwn is a way to launder several.million without so much as a suspicious sneeze their direction.

Here's what would have LITERALLY happened if they cast this properly (for example):

The Ghostbusters:
>Will Ferrell
>Kevin Hart
>Zach Galifianakis
>Bradley Cooper

The Secretary
>Scarlett Johansson

SO FUCKING SIMPLE.

Biggest movie of the summer, highest grossing comedy of all time, merchandising, videogame/mobile tie-ins, et al.

It would have 100% been the start of a new billion-dollar summer blockbuster trilogy.

How long will the executives continue to hemorrhage money pandering to the SJW movement? Millenial SJW's have no buying power.

Shit, they could have even added a female comedian to an all male cast and still made $350 million from Normie Moviegoer.

They literally just squandered a surefire billion-dollar franchise reboot. Feels great watching it crash and burn.

the army paid internet shills and "journalists" and I'm not kidding about that

They're going to "red tails" this. Expect a "BRING YOUR DAUGHTER TO GHOSTBUSTERS" fake viral campaign to commence immediately.

$144 Million budget? ON WHAT?!

That list is nearly as unfunny as the people they did hire.

FF made the mistake of not gender bending their cast. Imagine Mrs Fantastic, rockhard boobs, flaming tits and invisible man.

This whole GamerGate/SJW nonsense served some purpose - it showed a ton of people who previously identified as "liberal" what kind of meaningless bullshit mainstream liberals try to push.

Goddamn redpill...

You do realize the studio """""""""only """"""""" gets about 40% of that, right? The rest goes to the theatres, actors, overhead, union dues, ads/marketing department, etc. That's why a lot of directors say they need to make at least twice the budget to consider "breaking even."

Replace Bradley Cooper and Kevin Hart with James Franco and Dave Chapelle and it would be A+++

>Ghostbusters 2, adjusted for inflation, made more dough than Fembusters in their opening week
sound like it was a failure, IIRC Ghostbusters 2 was bad and it was the reason of no more sequels

but nobody would have wanted that anyway. And Scarjo is a terrible meme actress who's only gotten big because of Marvel.

people wanted the original quartet. people wanted a sequel, not a reboot. Or even a sequelboot where the original ghostbusters still exist and new ones take their mantle or something. literally NOBODY wanted a straight reboot.

agreed

There are a few fun things in Ghostbusters 2, but it's by and large a worse version of the original.

You get my point though, a male cast would have made bank.
