It's not that the Zodiac killer is "unsolvable," it's that every dipshit in the world threw their hat in the ring and over-complicated everything.
Robert Graysmith is a fucking dildo soyboy with no formal education or history in solving crimes. In both of his books and the movie, he made sure to mention Arthur Leigh Allen had "dirty dildos" in his house when they investigated it. Oh no! Only serial murderers would have dildos! And Graysmith would know a lot about it, seeing as his fucking wife divorced him.
Because like most people who have no experience solving crimes, Graysmith had a favorite suspect and just started seeing clues everywhere. Did you know Allen had dissected squirrels in his freezer? Sounds like a killer right? Did you know he also had a grant from the government to do it because he had a fucking BA in chemistry, a masters in biology, and published research in in the discipline? Suddenly it's not so weird. A detective would know that, but who cares -- Graysmith made some fucking Warner Brother's movie with half-truths and now everybody is a detective.
The most likely explanation is that there were a pair of people working. Whoever wrote the letters wasn't the person doing the murders. That simple.
