They're great, but of limited utility. We use ours for crushing sesame seeds (suri goma).

They're nice if your getting a solid consistency across fresh spices. I have 3, marble, stone, and wooden. Each has a different purpose and resulting texture.
People don't NEED them as most of the hard work can be don't electronically much faster, but if you enjoy the cooking process they are useful to have. Might end up with 1 huge forearm if you aren't careful.

If the mortar's inner bowl has fine ridges, it makes for much quicker pestling, but is a PITA to clean later

I was given one for my wedding, but after a year and a half we had only used it once for guac, which we really didn't need it for. We ended up tossing it. Mortle and pestle are low tier kitchen tools because there's not enough uses.
