because his short program was a trainwreck. Hanyu already said coming into these games that he didn't have to try too hard to get gold, that dude is a prodigy skater, if he felt threatened he woulda crushed chen in technical, but he knew he didn't need it because chen choked in the short.
That said I give props to chen, he got ultra aggressive because he knew he had to gain ground, and he pulled it off, no one came close to his technical score, but it wasn't enough. This is why people thought he was a gold medal contender, but he just left too much on the table.
