Back in the day the culture wars were going on in the US even then, but in more of a squares/rednecks vs hippies/leftists kind of way. Hippies weren't anything like todays SJWs though.

But anyways there was some real hostility towards longhairs in the 60s if you went to the wrong place out in the country or in the South. That's why rednecks ended up killing the main characters at the end of Easy Rider. My dad, who was a hippie hitchhiker for a while, said he and traveling friends were wary to go through the South.

Anyways, there was still a lot of residual resentment and anger ever since then. The Reagan years were in part an expression of the backlash of the 'Silent Majority' against permissive 60s culture and "dopers".

And what you basically see in this movie is a guy who looked like one of those dazed, possibly drugged up, hitchhiking ex-hippie to the local small town law enforcement. I think in part the movie was kind of commenting how badly Vietnam veterans had been neglected and how fucked up things were for many of them now.

Because the Sheriff was a Korean War vet and the Korean War is mostly forgotten.

He was pissed at Rambo because the soldiers coming home from Vietnam were getting lots of attention. The younger officers just went along with what Art told them to do "shave him dry "The man said clean him up did'nt he?"

Art and will both had there own agenda's. Teasal was more controlled while art was off the rails and would have killed him over nothing.

Vietnam vets weren't respected. You were viewed as making the world a worse place, unlike WW2 vets who were regarded as making it better.

Vets back then could cause trouble just by making an appearance somewhere in uniform. The cops were completely in the wrong of course and it was awesome how he slaps their shit, but the cops trying to move him across town without anyone seeing him was a reflection of the 60s.

Rambo: First Blood is a really interesting film. Kind of serious and a bit of a downer.

And then Rambo II is like one of the most over-the-top, roided up, cartoonish, archetypal 80s action movies.

Interesting / fun for different reasons.

He's about the same age as Arnie, so he's also a really good way to show people the difference between long term effects of steroid use. In his early movies is obvious that he isn't juicing, he's ripped but his body doesn't look like a roadmap balloon like Arnie's did. And now in their old age is pretty obvious who could win in a fight due to Stallone not taking any shortcuts.

Nighthawks is another goat Stallon film. Just a shame the studio and egos got in the way and recut the film before it was released.

In the book Rambo is not a sympathetic character at all, he's a real asshole who has a massive chip on his shoulder ho ends up going full blown whacko. The sheriff is pretty decent with him, even buying him some food and putting up with him returning to the town 3 times, before Rambo flips out in the station.
