Going to Austin from February 18 to February 21. Just Tuesday thru Thursday night, basically.
My hotel is at East 12th Street and I-35.
All that's really on my agenda is drinking (preferably at places where there are qt Latinas) and eating BBQ.
What are the popular places to go out in Austin, broken down by crowd?
Also I'm kind of overwhelmed by choices since there are a million bars within walking distance of my hotel, and they look kinda the same on google.
Oh and I'd also like to go to at least one nice Mexican (not Tex-Mex) restaurant

Stay away from 6th. It’s all tourists. Go to Rainey St. tons of bars. For BBQ everyone is going to tell you to go to Franklin BBQ. It’s good but not worth the wait. Go to Stubbs. Less of a wait.
Don’t go to any bars on East 12th unless you want to get shit on by locals

Mexican places are hard to find as most go Tex mex. There are a few holes in the wall but most suck. Austin doesn’t have good Mexican.
Side bar for pregame: Wells are 3 bucks each but they are poured like a double, then Shakespeare’s is great, chupacabra is also good.

If it’s not Franklin or La Barbecue it’s all kind of the same downtown. Don’t go to Terry Blacks. I think that’s a joke locals play on tourists and those who just moved here.
Locals hate tourists and transplants. They talk about how great Austin was when they moved here (5,10,15,40 years ago doesn’t matter). They will be friendly because Austin is friendly but they will be snarky and sarcastic as hell.

If you can get over there, go to Scholz Garten. Really good German food.

oh and I plan on going to somewhere like Wells Branch or Pflugerville for the main purpose of going to a smoking bar, but also because there would be less tourists away from downtown, and I like to experience that vibe when I travel

How does 6th street vary? Which are the best and worst parts?
Get an uber and do 6th, 5th and 4th streets. And Rainey street. Avoiding 6th because of this and this and that is like avoiding Bourbon street in NOLA. That makes no sense unless you've done it a million times. Also far west 6th is good.
Everyone makes bbq in Texas. Franklin's is a meme. Go to salt lick or county line or make a pilgrimage to Lockhart for the real deal.
I didn't intend on avoiding 6th street, just the worst part. I did go to Bourbon Street in NOLA, though I felt some blocks were better than others.
Anything west of i-35 is good. East is spotty. But its Austin. it's a fun house. Just dont drive.

Salt lick has pretty good how and there are way to many bars to pick from if your a tourist I'd say hit coyote ugly its a fun time all drinks will be and even amount as they don't keep change in their droars
