That isn't a hack. That's sabotage. We have emotions for a reason. You need to learn how to deal with them in a healthy way. Otherwise you might as well start using opiates to numb yourself.

Buddhists call this "labelling" where you simply label and identify the negative emotion you're experiencing.

It is extremely useful and helps you realise that "you" are not your emotions.

Emotions are a survival mechanism which prompt us to act in a certain way. Anger to defend ourselves, happiness to protect and seek what gives us a better chance of survival, sadness to avoid experiences that take happiness away.

humans have lived for so long that we rarely have an original thought, and when we think we do we just find out someone else already though about it years ago

Our emotions certainly did help us during our evolution, but you have to recognise that the reality we live in today is vastly different than the one we came from.

Scenario 1: It's the year 85,000 BC and someone in a neighbouring tribe steals your stash of food. You catch him doing this so you get angry and you kill him. You survive and he doesn't.

Scenario 2: The year is 2020 and someone cut you off in traffic. Do you react the same way, angry as fuck, get out of your car and kill the person? Or do you recognise that this anger you're experiencing isn't necessary to your wellbeing or survival. You can be angry, shout, beat the person up, get in trouble, stay angry for days about the situation and get sick in the process. Or do you recognise that the anger is pointless and you just let it go.

If you could choose to feel these negative emotions or not - you would choose not to experience them for long because they aren't useful for modern life. Would you rather feel bliss or monkey emotions? We have to evolve.

Yes I study biology. All these implications are not lost on me. Evolution happens still. My question was directed towards what part of buddhist phylosiphy , doesn't acknowledge these emotions as part of our being.

"I am angry" is impossible. How can you be an emotion? You can only experience an emotion, you cannot be it.

You cannot be anger, but you can experience it.

The next time you think "I'm angry" - change it to "I am experiencing anger".

This helps to separate the true "you" from your emotions, which are not you.

If you want to get balls deep into this stuff, Eckhart Tolle has some fantastic books that will change your life. Most people are a slave to their emotions.

What do you mean "what part of Buddhist philosophy"? That is pretty much what buddhism is about, realising your true inner you and not being affected by unnecessary external circumstances.

Your emotions are not you. You can experience them like the sky experiences clouds passing by.

So experiences are just circumstances we can choose, I see.
