This. Hawley's best quality is that he knows what he's doing, not just jizzing into the wind like a lot of American television does where it just ends up trailing off and not knowing where it's going (see: House, X-Files, Dexter, most long-running serials). The miniseries format helps with that but I'm confident that even across seasons he has a confident direction to his writing in a way not many showrunners have. This is what makes his work great and more filmic.

I don't understand why people shit on Molly, I think you need to go back and watch Season 1 again because at no point is she treated with kid gloves by the writers for being female. The gender angel on Season 1 was more about ego and its links to small-town machismo in dickheads like Sam Hess. Lester is drawn in by Malvo's "red tide" speech which is the ramblings of a sadistic psycho with fallacious ideas on human nature ("we used to be gorillas" is a stand-out scientifically inaccurate statement for such a seemingly intelligent man) and believes, similarly to Peggy, that he's embarked on a journey of self-actualisation.
Gus kills Malvo to protect his family, he doesn't care about the commendation and seems even a little traumatised/absent afterwards. Molly doesn't get to pull some heroic final shot on Lester and take him down, she spends the climax safely monitoring things from the police station and is just happy to have done justice by getting her Lester/Malvo connection recognised. The good guys don't have the ego. Molly is the complete opposite of a SJW because she's driven by outcomes, not by how she looks as she's doing it. She's a fully-rounded female protagonist done right. Heck, even Odenkirk's character isn't an ass to her because she's a woman, he's an ass to her because A: she's his junior and B: he doesn't want to believe it's true as explored in episode 9. Hawley is much more nuanced in his characterisation than Molly critics give him credit for.
