This is complete dramatization. There's not much evidence Ivan IV actually regretted killing his son that much. He later would go into fits about it, but he was probably bipolar and would throw fits over everything.

Jake in that scene is seems more subtly defeated. You can tell that he's trying to hold it together on the outside while the guilt and the vindication of all of his previous worries are brewing underneath.

You notice better how broken he is in motion. He's somewhere between the the two figures in OPs painting when it comes to his state of mind.
But the end of the day, a great wrongness has taken place, and there's nothing to be done to take that back.
