It smells kinda "sweet" can't really explain it but if they are dead for some time and start to rot it got a sweet smell like..i don't know how to describe that..
But more than one time people who never smelt it thought onto something completely different before they knew where the smell comes from.

I used to work in a morgue, they smell different at stages, recently dead smell like shit and piss because the bowels and bladder release. They rarely if ever smell of blood because most people don't die violently.
