I wasted my vote on Johnson last election. I didn't even know who he was. (I was away from civilization for a couple months before the election). I just didn't want to vote for the big two parties.
It's a waste because he doesn't have an actual chance, and that small percentage takes away what could be a victory for either other candidate. It sucks, it sucks we can't have more than two parties but the third parties in this country are hipsters that don't want to play nice with the powers that be to get enough respect in the first place.
You have to look at the situation too like who do you NOT want to be in the White House? You're not just voting FOR people you're voting AGAINST people. So you have to prioritize that. Johnson is okay-ish but I know if I vote for him, he won't win and one of the the other two parties inevitably will. I like Trump more and I hate Clinton, so Trump it is.
The third party people need to build up the third parities. Start local, Johnson sort of did that. But they always go straight for the top. Build up some power and become a lot more serious first. When they start polling at 30% then you have a good enough odds to vote for them.
