"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

How do you explain this Sup Forums?

I explain this with this quote:

"OP is a nigger"
-A. Einstein, 1938, University of Frankfurt

With a lumber of learning and some strong parts, Johnson was an odious and mean character. By principle a Jacobite, arrogant, self-sufficient, and over-bearing by nature, ungrateful through pride and of feminine bigotry, he had prostituted his pen to party even in a dictionary, and had afterwards, for a pension, contradicted his own definitions. His manners were sordid, supercilious, and brutal, his style ridiculously bombastic and vicious; and, in one word, with all the pedantry he had all the gigantic littleness of a country schoolmaster.

shots fired

Just because some guy said something does not mean that it is true. Lots of people say things. And lots of them are not true.

Lord Chesterfield was a cuck who wrote that to his son instead of the public or the man himself. Also, the entire reason for their feud was Chesterfield trying to claim unwarranted patronship of Johnson's work.

wtf i hate quotations now

hokum

Wow I wish people still got BTFO with this kind of style nowadays

hello there sailor

most meaningless statement i've read today desu lad. kind of like when bernie wanted to "end money in politics"

>samuel Johnson
>dictionary Johnson

> just 'some guy'

oh you

> To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.

Paine?

The point being: Lots of people say things. That doesn't necessarily mean they are true. YEs, even Sam Johnson. All that his statement proves is that he did not like patriots. It does not mean that he was the sole determinant of the absolute universal definition of a scoundrel.
That is merely his opinion. There is no explanation or reason given; we must assume that it is true because it his opinion.

The point being made is that a politician uses sheer patriotism as last resort to mobilise the masses; it's not against the patriotism of the average individual.

key words are "last refuge". If you don't have reading comprehension, you probably think that quote means being a patriot is a trait of horrible people.

Wasn't he just talking about faux patriotism?

"I'll have those niggers voting Republican for two-hundred years" - Abraham Lincoln

Never forget

I'll spoonfeed you user:
>patriotism was something comon in those times
>patriotism is easy to fake
>dishonest people may use faked patriotism to gain your simpaty
>you should not trust someone just because their allegiances (real or apparent)

I usually just ask them if they're socialists(and they almost always are) and tell them that they're failures.
