THE CHOSEN ONE

What the fuck is it with American movies (and games) and the over use of "The Chosen One" trope

Its in nearly everything and its not this bad in other cultures, sure they use it but not to the degree the US media does, its so played out and boring.

Do Americans just need to feel they are some special snowflake destined to do something great?

Pic related I know is UK but its just what comes to mind with the trope

Recent shit that has done this

>GOTG2, Star Lord youre so uber special despite being a fucking loser
>GITS , Major instead of everyone being a cyborg you are the only one youre so special
>Any Capeshit
>Any kids movie
>Rogue One, your dad made this so youre special somehow
>Ep 7 , fucking Rey cmon now

I think there is some several thousands of years old book that has similar "Chosen One" tropes

Name 8 books, 4 novels, 2 stories and 5 tales that do this

Charlie and the chocolate factory
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
My Neighbor Totoro
The Thing
and Twilight

The Jews are preparing us for their messiah.

I really hate the "Chosen One" or Prophecy trope. It's a lazy way to establish that a character is special without them actually having to achieve anything. Instead of working to get their God amongst Men status, it's handed to them on a silver platter

Their culture is brainwashed by capitalists with the whole Murican dream shit, individualism and selfishness. Then add religious brainwashing and it's obvious why the would like the archetypical "there is something special inside of you" characters.

That's true but modern movies try to avoid this shit usually.

It's central to the monomyth.

If you don't like it, you don't like stories.

>It's central to the monomyth.
No it's not. Look how Tolkien handled it.

I agree but technically Harry wasn't the chosen one, he just fit the billing for the chosen one. It was Moldybutt trying to kill Harry that made everyone think that. Sort of like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Harry didn't even have to fight Voldemort at the end there, the wand would have failed no matter who faced him. It was Longbottom that dealt the final blow.

He's the "Chosen One" because Voldemort chose to kill him instead of Neville.

Longbottom didn't deal the final blow you idiot. Just because you identify with autistic fatties doesn't mean they're relevant.

Film is a shitty medium which has to establish a reason for character to give a flying fuck about the MC as quickly as possible.

Superior mediums, such as video games, usually mock this concept since they know they have like 80 hours to tell a story. If you're the "chosen one" in a game, you're generally in pretty deep shit.

>Superior mediums, such as video games

Get the fuck out.

>D-d-delete this

Still waiting for that counter-argument.

>Guy Fieri actually mixes and matches those 2 sets

>makes a dumb claim
>wants a counter argument
Gaymers.

That's fine, a shitty answer from a follower of a shitty medium.

Though you can't really convince anyone that you're right by admitting you have no idea what to say.

Maybe stop watching shit franchises for manchildren.

It was a twist on the old story, as they all are.

>It's central to the monomyth.
not really, the only step in the myth which pertains to this is the 'miraculous birth' which isn't even an essential step, so it's hardly central

It's a common cliche in stories from white countries. White people need to feel special all the time.

Its star wars' fault. Before then, the only time you had a "chosen one" story is when it was like a childrens fantasy story.

After star wars everyone wanted their protagonist to feel like luke skywalker, but they played that shiiit out

Being someone who sees literally no appeal in life without being very exceptional in some way, I sometimes wonder if these stories influenced that. Death >>>>>>> being average/normal

>Harry Potter
>American

Nerd culture is the product of a late capitalist conspiracy, designed to infantalize the consumer as a means of non-aggressive control

harry potter is honorary american trash because it panders to the lowest common denominatr

If we're talking about the dullest franchises in the history of movie franchises, then Harry Potter is, in fact, The Chosen One. Seriously, Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though r-right

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Can't have a thread reference Hairy Pooper without someone posting this copypasta

That was actually smooth af.

Those intros are just getting better

Because everyone wants to believe that one day they could turn out to be special and important.

Bump

and you post a picture of a British character? lol

yes

narcissism

>Western trope?
>Naruto
>DBZ!
>JoJo

>listed 3 examples intended for underage audience
>meanwhile all western franchise still does "the chosen one" crap

WE

no they don't? does anyone on this board watch anything other than capeshit?

>why does ((Hollywood))) like the (((Chosen))) One

The "American dream" demands they buy into things like that, it's interesting to note that nip shit is about average teenager that happens to be really good at giant robots while western shit is just based on birth based merit

This is why I can't enjoy capeshit or any other similar garbage.

Skyrim is the worst offender in history with "The Chosen One" shit though

You are the savior of the World, The Mages Guild, Theives Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and the Companions because of like 6 different prophecies about how speshul you are

>Didnt read the OP

>>That's true but modern movies try to avoid this shit usually.
Are you retarded? this is the most well known trope in books, movies and in any medium that has a story. Modern movies never tried to "avoid this", some movies just do not revolve around it.

Seriously just off yourself.

Seems like all Bethesda games are like that. Same shit was in Fallout 4. They should really fire Emil Pagliarulo.

These people are hopeless user.
They go to the movies and are like "haven't heard of that before!" so they go see the latest capeshit and then shitpost incestantly about how much they hate capeshit. Or worse they eat it up.

this I keep watching this shit because all the normies do and I have no better idea how to lead my life or be an interesting person then I come here to rage about something that ruined the immersion

>he doesn't like the (((chosen))) ones

what did he mean by this ?

TL;dr OP is retarded and never took a basic writing course or even a history lesson

>it's been done a thousand times, therefore we should continue doing it

Fuck off, Chosen One is literally the worst trope in the history of fiction.

except it's not even an important part of the monomyth

So CJ's story was a fucking prophecy?

>Bem was a Nigerian wizard who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1991 to 1998.

>He was Sorted into Gryffindor and is in Harry Potter's year, however he does not dorm with Harry and friends.

Why is JK Rowling so fucking racist?

Why wasn't Bem allowed to share a dorm with the white kids?

ACCIO WALLET
*runs*

Jesus. Why didn't they just say he was in a different year rather than implying Dumbledore shove the fat black kids into a cupboard somewhere.

Make a fucking Hufflepuff. From Movie 3 onwards the houses all shared lessons anyway

...

Raimi does it again

...

The Narnia kids work better

>JoJo
What?

youtube.com/watch?v=XUhVCoTsBaM

I fucking hated those Narnia movies

I know what JJBA is, retard. I'm asking what it has to do with this trope.

Who will actually be the Antichrist.

"You did not accept me in my Father's name but you will accept someone else who comes in their own." - Jesus (paraphrased)

...

why do they all look like crack addicts

They're making another one. The Silver Chair I think.

Tell me how would you tell those stories without the MC being the chosen one? Somebody has to move the plot forwards.

>tell me how do you tell a story

racist dubs against russians

...

OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD

>youtube.com/watch?v=bRwXrcz-F9M

>fucking americans with their "chosen one" bullshit like harry potter!
>i know harry potter isnt american but its what comes to mind...
