>Has crappy animation sometimes >Trippy effects have sometimes faded >Shamelessly 70's French >nevertheless mesmerizing visuals >Great music >Muh story but genuine philosophical question at the heart
Are there any films that rival this one in the way it depicts a fantasy world reminiscent of the Romantic Age? Or, for that matter, manage to bring to life a Dali painting?
No, not really. But check out On the silver globe nonetheless.

>>Has crappy animation sometimes
jesus h christ, it was made in 1973! give them a goddamned break.
Christopher Jackson
It's crappy because the director exported the animation work to some studio in some Eastern European country and the budget was not very high
Adam Jackson
all René Laloux's stuff is worth checking out

Snow White was made in the 30s and has infinitely better animation
Daniel Cox
Snow White was also backed by RKO and 1.5 million dollars and it was setting a precident. It needed to be the best thing ever otherwise Disney wouldn't really be around. Fantastic Planet would have been twice as expensive and less unique if not for the cutout style. Also, that and limited animation were the rage in the 60's. (Python,Yellow Submarine)

Know more worthwhile cutout animation kino?

Pretty much any (American) animated short from the 30's has way better animation. No need to bring up feature length films. This film is obviously trying to do something outside of established Western animation, a la 12 principles, so it's mostly irrelevant.
Because it's a French film maybe.
Kevin Cox
Hedgehog in the Fog comes to mind. Soviet animation is always one of those patrician things. youtube.com/watch?v=oW0jvJC2rvM
is probably not "kino", but it's fucking funny and you can watch the whole thing before going to work/school.

>French film It was from a Czechoslovak studio actually. The story actually represents Russian aggression in Czechoslovakia/ Eastern Europe.
