As someone who has not read the books, nor have I any real knowledge about the Dark Tower lore, what is causing all the problems with the trailer?

Depends. I've read somewhere that film is not real adaptation, but rather what follows next after roland get sucked in "new" world. In this case it's kinda okayish to have a bit different plot and even black gunslinger doesn't bother me that much.
Apart from the obvious PC angle to it, does it affect how the story fits together? I heard things that the race of the Gunslinger was pretty central to the character in some ways.
Has almost nothing to do with the books and the characters are all wrong motivation-wise. They wrote themselves an out by making it sort of another cycle after the books, but that's a cop-out. The truth is that they don't have faith in the source material and turned it into some YA looking garbage with overblown action.
I like Idris and Matthew fine, but I think they'll suffer from a terrible screenplay and poor direction. Hell, McConaughey would be perfect for The Stand's version of Flagg.
Not that it matters, since the books took a serious dive in quality in Book 5 and just kept going downhill

First of all that's not true and second even IF everyone here had no objections about the race swapping in GITS it wouldn't be because the creator said it's ok. It would be because they know that having unknown asians leads in big budget western movies is not a good idea.

I don't see any problem with this. Look at the track record directors have with adaptation of Stephen King's stories. The major problem lies with King himself - he sells the screenplay rights for one dollar. This means any fucking sharp-talking hack can pull a swifty and purchase them.

But a few years back I read the comic books marvel did about it, not sure if it was a prequel or what, but it followed roland first as a young child and a teenager. Stopped reading it as I didnt have a decent internet connection where i moved to.
But the style and look they did was really great. You got this real mix of western and fantasy, like one world bleeding into another, not knowing if this was a future or a past
Would have preferred to have seen that story done first, and build up to the story of the dark tower books then.
Anyways I dont like elba, I think he isnt that good of an actor, and watched some documentary where he was training to be a rally car driver, and the guy just came across as an asshole
