WAS it a failure?

WAS it a failure?

On one hand, yeah no one saw it.

On the other, the game is selling like gangbusters, and for the first time in years, people seem to be giving a shit about Ratchet and Clank.

It might be worth it to make the Sly Cooper movie just to see if it revitalizes interest in THAT franchise.

If you make a movie for $12 million and spend another $12 million marketing it and only receive 4 or 5 million back, that's still a loss. And you can tell Sony was angling some sort of "Sony video game Cinematic Universe" with Jak and Daxter references in it.

Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd just shill out for a Netflix series or a show on Nickelodeon. Cheaper to produce.

I doubt the references were anything but just that. If they were seriously going all in for a cinematic universe, it would've made more sense to have Jak and Daxter be the next movie.

A TV show sounds like the better way to go, but maybe Sony still has cold feet after the LAST time they tried that.

this

Is it actually any good? To worried it would be shit to go see it.

Maybe this video will motivate you.

Why would Sony release a movie for a dead franchise?

It'd be like making a Parappa the Rappa movie.

I'd watch the fuck out of that.

> Sup Forums
There is no fucking reason for a videogame film to be on Sup Forums

As a die-hard Ratchet & Clank fan, I thought it was very mediocre. It tried to be far too safe and inoffensive.

That's like saying there's no reason to have a comic book movie thread on Sup Forums.

They TRIED to revitalize the Sly Cooper franchise like two years ago and it was basically the PPG reboot.

Insomniac has been releasing Ratchet & Clank games on a regular basis for 15 years, the movie didn't revive it by any means.

As far as the movie goes it's completely average. It's pretty to look at but the story is basic, the characters are nothing and most of the humor falls completely flat, but there are one or two actual great jokes.
Overall I don't feel like I wasted my time or money on it but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

It'll probably break even in the long run.

And meanwhile, the game is the fastest selling in franchise history and has been the #1 seller in the UK for two straight weeks. If we can consider the film as a glorified ad campaign that in the long run pays for itself. the movie may be a failure but the enterprise as a whole can be taken as quite successful.

It's hardly a dead franchise.
9 main games over the past 14 years is a pretty great record as far as video game franchises go, not to mention all the side games and whatnot.

I think positioning was a problem. Sandwiched between Civil War and Jungle Book. If they do better with it overseas, it might make a bit nore money. Breaking even sounds about right.

Doug Tennapel worked on this. The Earthworm Jim guy.

Hundreds of people saw this happening. And no one said anything.

I haven't seen the movie, but I saw the scene where Nefarious screwed over Drek and randomly becomes the main villain, and it just feels unnecessary. There's just no reason for it except that Nefarious is the most popular villain, especially since Drek worked alone in the first game.

Are you implying that Earthworm Jim wasn't a great series?

No, it was.

Mostly I'm wondering how the guy that did that looked at this and said, "yep, this is acceptable."

Drek was screwed over in general. In both the movie and game any shred of menace he had in the original game was stripped away (a large part admittedly has to do with replacing Kevin Michael Richardson) and was reduced to being a complete joke villain.

not exactly warcraft's numbers in people familiar with it, and even that movie seems a stretch

parappa would be great for its aesthetics and general tone alone
it had a tv series, it can easily carry a tv-size movie ala animal crossing

If I could rewrite the movie, I'd replace Cora with Helga, Cora is bland as fuck, at least with Helga you could have some funny banter between her and Qwark, considering his hard-on for her and her sensual powers of seduction.
Drek still gets voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson and is still sinister as fuck. Nefarious doesn't betray him, it's more when Drek is defeated, Nefarious acts like a failsafe to make sure shit gets fucked up for everyone anyway. That's mostly so we could have had a Drek bossfight in the final level of the game as well as the Qwark and Nefarious ones.
Ratchet is a dick at the beginning like in the original game, none of this cliche "wide-eyed youth has his dreams come true" his Han Solo style "self-serving pragmatist learns empathy" development was much better.

I won't say like gang busters but it is selling well. What matters is if it made profit, depending on the Development time and marketing. it might need to sell over two million to be profitable.

Of course even if it isn't it won't matter, Sony makes it's money from subscription fees now.

So they movie end up LITERALLY being an advertisement basically?

> it might need to sell over two million to be profitable.

I doubt it. This game appears to be made well, but well made on the cheap.. 2/3rds of the cinematics are either straight from the mlovie or just 3 characters standing without moving and just talking to each other. Not to mention all but one of the weapons a are from previous games so that couldn't have been too hard to implement.

The reviewer sounds tone death. Also never trust a hardcore fan to talk you into a critically bad movie.

stay mad

Is that why the recent death battle ended up so looking nice? I didn't care who wonder but it feels like the quality was cranked up and the timing was way too convenient... Like if it had extra money from a big sponsorship.

>not exactly warcraft's numbers
And BVS didn't do as good as Civil War so I guess Batman is a dead franchise

Yeah, basically. The only other time I can think of where the movie was meant to promote the game was the Super Mario movie.

Don't forget that The Wizard was just a Super Mario Bros. 3 advertisement. CALIFORNIA

Guess that makes 3. But in all seriousness, I am super happy that the game is doing well. I'm sure some at Insomniac want to move on from R&C but if the failures of Fuse and Sunset Overdrive have taught us all anything, it's that sometimes, you just gotta play the hits.

I don't own an Xbone so I never played Sunset Overdrive, but didn't that game sell fairly well and was pretty well received?

Was it a good game?

>No updates since 2014

Well yeah? I mean if it was a critical dud with no one watching it, I mean it's not going to be a box office success or even a cult favorite.

That might be a mercy in this cruel cold world. now someone pull the plug on Reboot so it can finally have a dignified death

I enjoyed the game but no surprise that the devs didn't do anything significant with the formula. I'll complain but I was happy to be playing a new game on the PS4.

I listen to this game podcast and one episode they did on Jet Grind Radio. During the episode it was brought up whether it would be good or not if there was a new JGR game. One of the hosts argued that a new game would be unnecessary because the game has gone far as it can go. JGR is the best example of that very specific formula and improvements couldn't be made without changing its framework considerably (arguable).

I think that's a problem I have with R+C. Ever since Going Commando, most of the games have just been a remix of that game. There's not much you can do with that formula. All of their spin-offs like Full Frontal have felt like gimmicks at best.

I'd argue that it's on the same level of quality as the first game. It does some things better, while some things are worse to the point where the two are in perfect balance. Meaning if you enjoyed R&C1, you'll enjoy the remake, but not for all the same reasons you enjoyed the original.

Thank christ, this looks ugly as sin.

>Ever since Going Commando
Try Up Your Arsenal. Going Commando made a lot of major new additions and refinements to the series (especially strafing), but Up Your Arsenal refined most of the rough edges plus introduced the Lock-Strafe control scheme, AKA the most optimal control scheme for any R&C game where it's available.

Why does Sly look like a porn star?

The games all follow a pretty strict formula, yes but I've never NOT had fun playing a R&C game, so why fix what isn't broken?

It's a great game. At least the 3rd best in the series. Behind the zenith, Up Your Arsenal and Crack in Time.

>believing the "the new designs are shit" meme

Just goes to show that Sup Forums gets its opinions from podcasts instead of themselves. Whenever Sup Forums needs an opinion on something its "oop, better find a podcast QUICK!"

Super Mario Galaxy was great though.

Does the game follow the same problem that the ps3 games do, where they are incredibly short and have less weapons as they go on?

Out of all the Ratchets, I think this one suffers from the less weapons as you go on the least. All the weapons keep up a level of effectiveness even late game.

As for the length, I think it's pretty good. It's not incredibly shorts. It's just behind UYA in length, and I consider UYA's length to be pretty good.

Yes and no, but the game is $40 and it has roughly 2/3rds the levels as a result.

>All the weapons keep up a level of effectiveness even late game.
Except for the Combuster. Fuck the Combuster.

You know the laser pistol is never any good.

The Blaster is one of the ONLY good weapons in the first game

Wait wasn't the bouncer in the first game?

Untrue. The Heavy Lancer and N90 Hurricane were useful weapons in a pinch by the endgame due to their high rate of fire. Even when you pump up all the rate of fire upgrades into the Magma Combuster in either Tools of Destruction or R&C 2016 it's still slow and barely does any real damage.

The Bouncer was in Going Commando. Also is wrong since he forgot that the Devastator, Tesla Claw, Morph-o-Ray and (to a lesser extent) the Glove of Doom existed in the first game.

These games always had the best commercials

youtube.com/watch?v=uH2dM_LLKJg

Sometimes I wonder if MGSV's inflatable decoys were inspired by the Decoy Glove from R&C1.

Can we all agree the Combuster is one of the worst starter blasters in the whole franchise?

>Slow as fuck
>Doesn't get much faster after upgrades.
>Ammo count is always way less than the type of weapon it is.
>Also doesn't gain that much Ammo with upgrades.
>Lacks the bouncing bullet effect the N60 Hurricane gains in UYA.
>Becomes obsolete very early.

Even the Nexus Blasters became faster to shoot and the Constructo Pistol at least had the mods going for it.

The Devastator is crap, it can't hit a god damn thing.
Glove of Doom is pretty great though
and the walloper

>Why does Sly look like a porn star?

>mfw that guy who photoshops furry characters in to IRL porn

Can not unsee

Mini-turrets. Mini-turrets forever.

I forgot about the Walloper, another great weapon. But you are using the Devestator wrong, you have to fire it whenever a green target appears on the enemy. And once you get the Gold Devestator even if you miss you'll probably hit since that ricochet is insane.

Here's my real question tho........

..........Sheepinator.....or Morph-o-Ray?....

Sheepinator. Sheep are funnier

Those didn't get introduced until GC, but they were pretty great. A bunch of those tossed out plus the Kilinoids plus the Tesla Barrier plus the Plasma Coil = instant victory for any arena battle in either GC or UYA.

The original Sheepinator from Going Commando was the worst morphing weapon in the entire series. The Sheepinator in R&C 2016 (which evolves into the Goatinator) is one of the best and most overpowered morphing weapons in the series.

But that's a lie. Chickens are an inherently funnier animal, that's basic animal-based humor science.

Can we all admit however, that we all immediately bought this fucker when we had the right amount of bolts?

>and it was basically the PPG reboot

The fourth game had its flaws, but let's not say things that we can't take back.

>They didn't capitalize on making a commercial like these for the PS4 game.

What a shame.

>"the new designs are shit" meme
The fuck are you on about? People think they're shit because they look nothing like the designs in the game and go for the hyper-realism look rather than the more cartoon-ish designs of the game.

Did the game even get any TV commercials at all?

This. At least the R&C movie maintained the art style of the series. Granted, that's mainly because both the movie and game basically had been using 6 years worth of assets from the PS3 games.

This piece of garbage better not be the reason that we haven't gotten an Ape Escape since 3

I'm honestly kinda sick of him. He's been reused too often

I've seen promotion for Zootopia all over my country.
Posters, trailers and other promo material for this movie seen so far: 0

Guess which one people here watched.

The game sold really well. The movie tanked.
Guess the success of the game counterbalances how crap the movie was.

How can anybody defend this film? You people do know, that the movie has the EXACT same cutscenes, from the game? As in the scenes from the film are ripped and placed into the game? How the hell did Sony think this was a good idea?

yes

>it was like the PPG reboot.

It really wasn't. It had issues but it was nowhere near that bad

That's why they introduce it so late in the game.

They had commercials for the movie that always ended with a plug for the game. Combining the marketing for both the movie and game to cut down on costs. Quite clever actually, and apparently it worked so good on 'em.

>slyfags in denial

Anyone else find it hilarious that the game on some occasions looks better than the movie?

>On some occasions.

Yeah. I agree. On "Some" occasions.

>Looks at "expressionless Ratchet" in the in-game cutscenes.

Unlike the movie the game had destruction physics. Seriously, during that entire battle on Kerwan, in the movie every single time a warbot was blasted it just toppled over. In the game whenever you fought warbots or any other similar enemies they'd explode into pieces once you've dealt the finishing blow.

I do agree that was pretty annoying. I know Insomniac was helping to make the movie too, but they couldn't have been THAT understaffed on animators. Rainmaker's one job was to animate the damned thing themselves while Insomniac worked on the game.

Insomniac think they're slick with that too.

>We need to save money on this game to justify the $40 price tag, what do we do?

>How about for the cutscenes that aren't straight from the movie, we break them into two groups. Anytime it's a cutscene not from the movie involving a character from the movie, like Qwark or Elaris or Nefarious we do a full in engine, well directed scene. Any other cutscenes involving characters like skid mcmarx or the blarg brain doctor we do a cheap mannequin version of a cutscene.

>Brillliant!

That's a problem with R+C is general. They know which jokes and characters the fans like and they overexpose them.

Basically, the movie based off the bagme sucked but the game based off the movie based off the game was very good?

Also, it sounded like what they did with the movie is exactly what bootleggers did when they made the Final Fantasy X movie. Play through the entire game, record the footage, cut out the game bits and stitch together the cut scenes.

I'd take Nefarious out entirely. I'd give Drek the same role as the original game with the same reveal that he was polluting his own worlds for a profit. I'd give Victor more of a design based on the robot Lt from the first game, and while I love Stallone, go back to the military schtick and get R Lee Ermey for the voice. Also, make Victor more prominent to make up for no Nefarious.

I was replaying Going Commando recently and it got me thinking about how much of a shithole the Bogon Galaxy is. Between Thugs 4 Less running around as the go to police group and Megacorp destroying planets in the name of profit, it's no wonder Ratchet and Clank never went back after returning to Solana in Up Your Arsenal.

Not to mention that these things exist.

God that game was filled with filler planets. How many Megacorp factories can one game have?

Put Kevin back in as drek and you've got a deal.

Currently worried about the Sly Cooper movie.

I'd write it like:
>Narrative structure like Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy
>Add Helga, Sasha, Skidd, and Big Al along with the three new characters. Or just stick to the three and write them like if they were people you would work with at a part-time job rather than two indistinguishable "badasses" and a nerd.Or just take out the rangers and just leave Quark.
>Ratchet is more of a dick and is less compliant with Quark's idiocy.
>Take Nefarious out completely.
>Have Clank's origins changed to where Gadgetron manufactures police bots (That all look like Cronk and Zephyr) that patrol the galaxy, and have themes of ethics explored with this, and have Clank as a defect. Maybe barrow some of the plot elements from Chappie.
>Have Max Apogee appear as a retired-explorer-turned head of Robotics at Gadgetron foreshadowing Talwyn.
>Cut out half of the lame "jokes" that were in the movie.

How many of those weapons would our army want to buy?

I like Sly 4 more than the first three. Honestly, I thought the original Sly games were all good, but not great.

>make an enemy
>make them broken
>make them spawn constantly
I get that Grelbin was rushed but holy shit Insomniac.

This fucker was the very first weapon I levele up all the way. Been saving my ass in Challenge Mode.

Really love the new game, I'd say I like ACIT and UUA more, and tie it with Nexus.

TOD would be higher if the cutscenes weren't all fucked up. Captain Slag and Rusty Pete are my favorite villains in the series, but I love pirate characters.

It great seeing Big Al and Skidd nice and updated for PS4, but kinda wish Helga didn't get cut.

>tfw no huge fat robot waifu to tell you how you couldn't handle her

I don't really mind Nefarious betraying Drek, Drek is dreck anyway.

I just what them to make more comics, I'm re-reading it and so much could be expanded upon if they ever make a on-going.
It still holds up tho.

Which is a real shame, because the game is actually garbage.

I remember being really disappointed the art in the comics didn't look like the covers. HUGE fan of the Creaturebox guys and was hopind they did the whole thing.
