They were treated as bad as gays at the time by colonials, which for their culture would have been shocking for them as they were accepted in their own society.
There are a lot of tribes in the Americas and they all vary in how they believe and interpret things. Two spirited were like a third gender among the Northern Tribes, often men who took roles as women. Even the Cree word for them translates as essentially "Man who dresses as woman".
Obviously such a regional thing makes the term confusing to people outside North America.

I'm all for black rights/issues in the Americas, but the LGBT shit is just getting too much. Gay, straight, whatever, anyone who's entire identity is based on their sexual orientation bothers me. And very few people in today's society give a shit if you're gay.
