Not quite, that's an oversimplification of what divinities are. The old names were no more "correct" than the new Saint James connection. This is a complex matter of archetypes and deepseated matters of the human consciousness that I can't do justice to here in a small post.
You do rather overestimate the orthodoxy of your mediaeval ancestors, though. When you consider the blatantly heathen things people were doing in the lifetimes of our own grandparents, you have to multiply that several times the further back you go in history.
