(In successful economies like Germany, there are state owned banks which give out loans for long term investment.) It wasn't a tax on investing, it was a tax on unearned capital gains.

Britain's failure isn't down to meddling lefties, it's down to an (almost) uniquely British failure to engage with the long term which has applied across the left-right spectrum and in both the Keynesian and Neoclassical eras.
