The point of taking Donbass is, in the eyes of the Vatnik AKA Russian foreign minister, is that Ukraine is Russian clay, and should belong to Russia. Wasting military ordinance and being raped by sanctions does not serve a practical purpose, other than ownership of a shitty Black Sea port.

What little I've read is what I had heard before. They were constantly invaded from the East across the Steppe so they pushed to the Pacific. They were invaded by from the West at times so they pushed there borders westward and set up bugger states as a shield but are still paranoid of another invasion from the West. It's centuries of history creating mass paranoia of outside neighbors coupled with only strong leaders being able to defend them and keep things running (or so they've continuously been led to believe). At least that's what I've read before.
