Actually, you're only partly right. Seth McFarlane actually realised how shit the left is and he made a twitter post about how he'd given up on it. As soon as that happened he turned Brian into an idiot leftist who is mocked for his shit rather than being the soapbox. The writers on American Dad wrote it as "LOL REPUBLICAN DOES SILLY THINGS" but they moved onto Bordertown (which is the same shit, but they mock the left a lot as well). Seth resented what Family Guy had become and he didn't want American Dad to go the same way, so he just left it and voiced it.

It's about as similar to Family Guy as it is to the Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Bob's burgers -- animated comedy about a family, but the humor isn't like family guy.
The lead is one of the most competent characters in the show, doesn't use flashbacks, is lighter than most on the "everyone resolves their differences at the end in a feel good moment" formula, doesn't resort to topical humor, and has a neat quirk of background characters frequently espousing life stories in the midst of the central conflict mocking the whole "The world revolving around the main characters" thing.
It's great at satirizing itself in subtle self-awareness without actually breaking the 4th wall unlike Family Guy which is anything but subtle.
