What are all the must-knows when it comes to making money, (or even a living,) off of webcomics?

What are the most important things to do/know?

What are the best/easiest ways to make that money?
Ads?
Merch?
Patreon?

I got the hard drive back.

A very mysterious user sent me an iso via email, and walked me through all the command prompts I needed to do.

It was extremely arcane but it ended up working.

Thank fuck.

>Ads
Adblock'd
>Merch
Additional responsibility. Inaccessible unless your comic has already established nice fanbase.
>Patreon
Easiest shit. No wonder why people flock to this. Sure, there are creators willing to payback their patreons with bonus goodies, but for some, they can get away with almost next to nothing (like just promising more artstreams, faster deliveries, etc.)

Also, lookout for Imzy.
>inb4 leddit shill
That site is a carebear version of the site the creator just got fired from, seems real shitty now aint it, but they have this "tipping" thing where people who liked your comment/product/whatever, can tip you irl money just for posting it. If it ever takes off, well you know what to do. Don't expect to get the full amount tho. Its easy as balls to please people, but that site will still get a % because they said that's how they'll keep the site alive instead of ads.

Good stuff. Thanks m8.

I just hope I can find good Patreon incentives. I hate the idea of putting "exclusive" stuff behind a paywall.

Think it would kill you to be a bit more peppy about such an exciting medium that functions off the cogs of imagination and wonder?

Jesus.

yeah ive been busy playing uncharted 4 on ps4... sorry, yall, im not going to finish this page anytime soon and im in no hurry to do so, sorry i missed the last thread, im going to go ahead and miss this one to, just dropped by to show yall a preview of the next page i will work on when im done 100% completing uncharted 4 (all treasures, all combos, max difficulty completion, etc)

how come no one here has made it yet? passing Sup Forums frequenter genuinely curious.

You kidding? There are those that have.

I mean it would depend on what you call "people here".

The 6 billion demons guy has come here before y'know. So has chochi. Even Ashley Cope has visited us.

But what you're wondering about is this: It takes a while for someone to make it. And these threads are relatively new. Yes. 2 years is new.

Do I sound dull?
I hadnt slept to make this 272th thread what with us not leaving page 8 forever and its nighttime here.
>WELCOME TO PATREON! ENJOY YOUR STAY AMD MONEY! WHOOP!
Suck my dick.

Update! What do you guys think?

>>WELCOME TO PATREON! ENJOY YOUR STAY AMD MONEY! WHOOP!
>Suck my dick.
A bwuh...?

Too violent and exciting.

Pls fix it.

... ?!?

Setting up a Patreon myself; just need to come up with a "Why you should support me" statement that's a little more than "gib moni pls huahuehuahuehuahue".

I'm considering having high-res artwork go up on the Patreon, while smaller versions are released for free in the usual social media outlets. Similarly with comic strips - a larger strip will appear on the Patreon first, while the usual size will appear for free on the main website later. Everything will be free to view in standard definition, or you can pay for early access to high-def content. Maybe have one or two things (eg wallpapers) that are Patreon exclusive.
I'll also have a sketch commission tier; get a personalised sketch once a month.

The rest sounds good, but can you trust your patreons not to leak the high def stuff?

I can tell you for a fact that psudonym lurks here.

>Adblock'd
Lately, I've come to believe that far fewer webcomic readers use Adblock than I previously thought. I still won't be mad at them for using it, even on my site, and I won't ever ask them to whitelist me or anything, because I too use Adblock. I'm no hypocrite.

Speaking of ads, there's a link in the Pastebin in that I really feel should be removed in future /hyw/s, namely the one about which advertising services to use to make money, because I checked it last night and it's really, REALLY out of date. Multiple ad services it discusses are now defunct. It's just not a good resource anymore.

>What are the most important things to do/know?
You can't make money if your comic isn't good.

That's not true in the slightest, but pretend it is so you push yourself to be better.

bump

I think the bones could have come out better. Also not thrilled with the 'acting' in this one.

I think you're being too hard on yourself.

I hope those addresses are only put on the uploads you bring here.

Someone's gotta be; I don't get enough actual criticism, and I'm afraid that my work suffers because of it.
Too much? I thought it might be too much.

dead thread

your comics are already dead

1 page update this week.

LuckyHazard.cfw.me/

>Too much? I thought it might be too much.
It immediately pulls me out of the awesome page I just looked at.

You gotta be quieter with that stuff. I mean it doesn't have to be completely absent, but it can't be in large 100% black lettering.

I thought each panel is very well executed, although something to think about is to have the panels not to have such logical progression, and leave certain things to the imagination rather than guiding the viewer step by step.

I haven't seen the previous page, one idea is to have the first panel a bit further away in terms of camera placement. So you get a larger view of relative position of each actors. Occassionally putting back more in general is good idea, sometimes its a pain in the ass if you have to draw certain type of bg tho.

This is as far as I am going to work on this page, its taking up too much time I am just going to move on. On the bright side, I know exactly how many pages my first chapter is going to be, 38. Because I completed all of the dialogue heavy storyboarding for it. I will start writing summery for the second chapter soon.

Here are some additional pages I was working on.

The last one for now.

no dude i like that guy. i just wanna be right
watch out for that nose on the dude, its angle is changing a lot
AHH CUTE holy shit. sometimes i forget how nature-accurate you can be, but i remember you also knocked those goats out of the park

nice job man. something similar happened to me once. knowing someone nice and good at this shit is really the only way you can succeed at computer

interesting, a ceremony. yeah i'd wanna stay retired after that too. just outta respect.

bones don't really crunch unless they're breaking under your feet, which youd have to be a massive and heavy giant..
uh, you should ALWAYS have some kind of indicator on your pages, so people know where to find them if they're posted outside your site. a googlable title is good. you don't need your tumblr AND your patreon, just the tumblr is fine

I use adblock, but I always unblock specific pages I want to contribute to. Don't you guys do the same?

Nope! I Adblock as much as I possibly can, which is why I will never get upset at my comic's readers for Adblocking me.

ads on even the most trusted site are guaranteed (in the way that if something has a 1 percent chance and you do it thousands of times it's guaranteed) to have something infecty in them.

I don't Adblock at all.

Who here has revealed their webcomic power level to their friends and/or family? What were their reactions?

How do you mean? That I make a webcomic or...?

show off your cuties /hwc/

purple hair isnt cute

purple hair is cute, don't listen to

Teresa is cute! CUTE!

...

Everyone seems to love this ugly piece of shit.

And some like jack I get.

Fuck off.

Don't be rewd.

Making some major strides with this monstrosity. Really happy with how the antenna on the top and the doors are turning out. If anyone has any ideas on what to do with those empty spaces of cement on the sides there I'm all ears.

more importantly, if you can still make changes the the logo, you should make these red and blue less saturated. They are really jarring, and quite frankly, kinda ugly.

yeah the logo will be different in the final product, all of the screens are just place holders.

Also here's a rough version of how it will be animated once finished.

Your perspective is nice, to the point where it makes your anatomy look really bad in comparison. Especially on pages that feature the characters in those high level perspectives.

It's unavoidable though, as you can only learn so fast as you go. But I would say spend less time on the buildings and details and more on anatomy for now.

>everyone
Don't kid yourself, the people who like that crap you can count on one hand

>no one posting comics
it' ssaturday afternoon. a re you guys even working on anything?

I am.
I'm just too scared and self-conscious to post my comic here.

stop roleplaying

I'm actually writing a script right now.

>a permission

I'm dried out of ideas... and has been banned on two of the places I go to for my comics.

Be nice, AmonZone is a godless chink who doesn't speak English as a first language.

I'm moving to a new apartment in a different state.

Not trying to be mean. Just got a chuckle out of it.

I usually do my work at the beginning of the week (aka sunday and monday) because I work nightshifts.

I'm planning on doing character studies to get my main characters down pat before I post the first chapter. Headshots with different emotions at different angles. I plan on releasing my first chapter by the end of the new week

>implying you aren't going to procrastinate and make it the next week instead

How Can I Be Godless If God Isn't Real?

I only post the initial sketch with words, then the final page after if anyone has critique.
I don't want to flood the thread with endless works in progress (like a certain shitposter in here) but this is my current page
A lot of people don't like the bluntness in the last panel, and I'm inclined to agree, but I can't think of what to replace it with.
Also, right now I'm looking up how to apply better line weight, so I'll probably do another pass on the inks

Girl has like no cranium.

The wording in the third panel confuses me. So he would have preferred if she said, "What? Or else!" instead of "What? Why?"

"You kill her" might flow better than "kill her" in context. And the preceding statement feels a little long paired with both the shorter statements and the expression of surprise.

Is her head too small?

m8... her head is shaped like a guitar pick.

Even if the head is tilting back?

is it tilting back? I didnt know.

If her head is tilting back we should see the bottom plane of it. Also her lip is almost touching her chin.

ah, good point.

>eliminate her

rabbit fencing

I just finished a massive comic commission and I'm gonna get hammered and work on scripts. Might actually do something with my non-porn comic for once.

Also I am receiving some business advice. Yay.

share business advice

that's not really how you're going to do word bubbles, is it?

I will but the person giving it to me went out to buy more liquor so I'm not sure how viable it will be. But he's doin' pretty good so yeah.

Too many waifu's...I cant pick just one!

Your work is very nice- it makes me want to be a better artist (and maybe try screen tones).

Pic related is tonight's thing. Sticking with bnw I have more or less doubled my rate of page productio (now I can get 2 done in a week) despite the fact I just started working full time. I'm lookimg at working 3 twelve hour shifts weekly so I can have four days off a week.

Bump. Where the comix at?

In this thread.

oh thanks

Doing a few collages of images as a sorta teaser for The Sisters. Something nice enough to be shared for cool illustrations alone, but something that puts the previous arc and next arc in context.

Here's some inks of the first batch. Tryina work a bit more with shadows and spot-blacks. Got 2 more batches to ink and then splashin em all with color.

ima save that under chin shot for future reference. shit's perfect.

This is a commision I did for a coloring book.

Loved doing it. Thinking of doing some kind of soviet kitch comic.

never seen a coloring book with the shading lines decided for you. neat.

Finished this page!

>wow the simple colors actually don't assault the eyes, not bad-
>seizure inducing spazms in the second panel

Is she supposed to be sexy?

you guys don't deserve comics

If you want her to be.

go on

tryin to color outside the line with me buddy??!?

Slow, but steady... it's going to be quite a while before I can release anything substantial. I'm going to have to learn to be patient.
