The camera places you in a defenseless location, backed into a tight corner below your surroundings
Also However the music and sound design creates most of the scene's atmosphere

Can someone answer me HOW THE FUCK Lynch made the first 30 minutes of Lost Highway so bugs-crawling-on-my-skin terrifying and anxiety-inducing?
Like even the first 3 or 4 minutes of just the couple hanging out in the house, all that comes to mind is such extreme fear and loathing, even jealously.
for a nice, down to earth guy, Lynch is just really good at toying at that primal unease/fear that we all hold as a survival mechanic.
its no coincidence that Lynch is a very vivid dreamer by his own report, and that the depths of our dreams also are one of the few places this deep ancient terror visits us
also dream logic/themes play a recurring role in his films
not to be cliche but the diner scene in Mulholland drive is the closest thing ive seen that truly replicates the atmosphere of a nightmare
