It's a pretty shitty, but not uncommon tactic within the media. Get smaller organiaztions and freelance journalists to report lies without fact checking, then once they repeat the lie enough, big time media like CNN can release a story that there are "troubling reports that wikileaks has put overseas agents into jeopardy and shared sensitive financial info such as CC numbers."
And since they are technically reporting on reports and not on facts, they can distance themselves from the need to fact check. Sort of like how the "Putin meddling in US elections" spin came about. It is quite easy to perpetuate a lie and wash your hands of being a liar if you play the cards right.
