Here's the thing though. TNG is barely Star Trek. It feels stilted and sterile and the crew lacks the same chemistry the crew had in TOS. I think TNG would have turned out better if they had kept more of the focus on Riker.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong on where this is all going, but I know based everything - "if it looks good $$$$ that's all that matters" is how all of this is going.
We were so much better when writers were expected to make up for the lack of VFX. Details were important, and there was always something deep inside to think about that left you wanting more.
Now it's all "looks cool bro", and forgettable.

Because the people involved with making new Trek stuff don't really give a shit about it as a whole. Abrams never watched a single episode of TOS and yet was put in charge of the reboot movies and look how that turned out.

If that's the case why fucking bother with anything when it comes to the visuals of Star Trek. Let's make the Vulcans blonde hair and blue eyed elves right out of Tolkien. They got pointy ears so that should be enough, right? I mean that "Klingon" has the head ridges like Klingons so that's close enough. Also let's ditched the look of Federation ships. Who cares about iconic looks? Let's make it look more "realistic" by having it look more like something a more militaristic civilization would design.
