Now I admit I know next to nothing about martial arts or any of that shit, but aren't soldiers generally trained in such a way that they can create distance and bring their rifle or weapon to bear? I think without an actual weapon they're not really trained to the standard of someone that does melee professionally.

Don't know about U.S. but in Russia soldiers aren't really taught how to fight with their bare hands. They can spar occasionaly but only as a part of physical training. Can't see anything wrong here though. To go into a fist fight you'd have to lose your rifle, your secondary weapon AND your knife (shovel In case of russian army lol). I read somewhere that it is almost forbidden to fight with your bare hands if you have something of the above. UFC fag will win. Does it mean he is a better "warrior"? I don't think so.
