All of the male characters are completely hopeless nerds with no social skills. They all have mother issues.
They're complete man children but its shown in a good light, like you can be pathetic and waste your money on toys but you will still get a woman.
So when they do eventually by some stroke of luck get girlfriends, the woman are all the dominant figures in the relationships.
Even though Penny is the only one who isn't supposed to be smart and could be seen in a bad light, she is cast as cool and savvy and every one dotes on her.
If by any chance the male is masculine, he is shown to be incredibly stupid, except in one case where the man was both smart and mature and he turned out to be a cheater and an ass hole.

2. In later episodes the show hints several times that both of them have lots of money, apparently they just *like* living together
