Has the Golden Age of Television ended?

Has the Golden Age of Television ended?

A few years back I heard the reason movies became so shit was because all the best writers and directors saw more potential on TV.

It seems that chapter is closed now though.

Fargo and Leftovers are still airing

When "Dear White People" even exists and has 100% on RT, we are in a dark TV era.

No pun intended

Nothing is good anymore. The guys in charge don't care about making money anymore. They don't want to entertain they just want to make propaganda

Don't include breaking Bad in that image. That shit doesn't belong there.

Legion revolutionized Cape Shit.

>thought that was dave chapelle

one of those characters doesnt belong lets be adults here

just because he's black doesn't mean it wasn't a good show

> Mr. Robot
> Game of Thrones
> Halt and Catch fire
> Humans
> Vikings
> Expanse
...

Also, I agree that there are a number of TV shows that are far better than present day movies. One episode of a particular show is better than most movies.

There are a number of great directors and writers waiting for their debut. However, rarely does hollywood source them vs. silly ass reboots and brainlet tier sequels. The movie scene is drifting towards a death bed this year IMO.

Halt and Catch fire had a GOAT third season. Donna was the final boss all along.

That show is good though.

>One episode of a particular show is better than most movies.

Lol, maybe better than capeshit.

>Mr. Robot

The libtarded Fight Club rip-off?

Problem these days is that there are about 20 tv shows "worth watching" but none of them are 10/10. And you have to watch everything because of FOMO.

>Has the Golden Age of Television ended?

Yes, definitely.

> Mr. Robot
Biggest work of plagiarism in TV history

> Game of Thrones
Gets by on porn and other stupid shit. The most overrated TV show of all time.

> Halt and Catch fire
Unrealistic, agenda driven garbage. Glad its cancelled.

>> Humans
>> Vikings
>> Expanse

Shit

>libtarded

Found the retard

>Game of Thrones
>Gets by on porn and other stupid shit. The most overrated TV show of all time.
kys senpai. If you don't think GoT is one of the GOAT shows of this era, you're a retard

we got the leftovers, fargo and twin peaks m7

>Problem these days is that there are about 20 tv shows "worth watching" but none of them are 10/10.
that's exactly my point

My heart used to beat rapidly for a new Sopranos episode.
Nothing gives me that feeling anymore.

GoT is the most ridiculous, laughable nonsense ever put on TV. If they didn't have so many sex scenes the ratings would be much lower. Because no one is watching this for the plot of the acting, because both of those things are terrible.

Imagine, building an entire show around a woman who can't act. A woman whose ever moment on screen is cringe worthy and awful.

And she's the most important character in the story.

LEL

It's not cancelled. Was renewed October of last year.

Leftovers is shit and that's why it's canceled. Twin Peaks season 2 was god awful, so lets hope the new series can make up for that.

I'll give you Fargo.

the early seasons are good, not great. but the writing in the last few seasons has been so shitty.

Final season.

>If they didn't have so many sex scenes the ratings would be much lower. Because no one is watching this for the plot of the acting, because both of those things are terrible.

How stupid are you? You can search GoT hashtags when it's airing and see no one is praising it for the nudity or sex, in fact, most people think it should be lessened.

Emilia is a great actress, fuck off contrarian cuck
Explain

Last Man on Earth is pretty good for Network TV.
Feud was shockingly good.
Halt and Catch Fire and Into the Badlands keep AMC above the zombie shit.

>Emilia is a great actress

No, she is literally the most untalented person to ever land a major role. Her voice sounds ridiculous. Her performances are awful. She constantly has unintentionally stupid and laughable expressions on her face. She is literally the worst actress on tv.

>Last Man on Earth is pretty good for Network TV.
Unwatchable garbage.

>Halt and Catch Fire and Into the Badlands
Unwatchable garbage.

Halt and Catch Fire is so insulting to the actual people who pioneered the modern computer age. It's pure fucking garbage.

This. TV is still really good and still far better than nearly all mainstream films, but it definitely isn't as great as it was during the Sopranos/Lost/Mad Men/The Wire/Walking Dead S1/Fringe era.
Once serialized and cinematic TV became 100% mainstream, the same diseases that ruined mainstream film started infecting it.

she's pretty and that's all that matters

I like GoT as much as the next person but Emilia Clarke is easily the worst part about the show.

When people excuse terrible shit because its network TV, they seem to be forgetting that Lost, Hannibal, and Fringe all aired on major networks.

God I hope you're being sarcastic.

Well I agree with you in that I still believe network TV is capable of creating good stuff. Have they done it lately? No.

>be retarded
>call nudity "porn"

>all the best writers and directors saw more potential on TV

Because TV shows gave them more creative control than films. But now that Netflix, Amazon and others are producing original films and giving filmmakers big budgets with 100% creative control, there is no need to do a TV show instead of a movie. Remember how filmmakers used to say that the mid-budget, script-driven films were dead and stuff like that had moved to television? Well, now that kind of films are back on the menu, thanks to those big streaming companies that are throwing around money like they are Saudi princes trying to fuck Elle Fanning.

Even the shitiest tv shows are still miles above most movies.

The last movie i saw that i siad "wow" at was room. I said wow last episode of bcs. Pretty much every episode of santa clarita diet, which was a very middle teir sitcom, was better than 95% of last years movies.

Here's the truth: there never was a golden age of television. Every decade has both shit and gold.

I'll give you three examples:

1) How many detective shows from this modern era legitimately stack up to Columbo?

2) How many science fiction shows from the last decade are actually worth a shit like Star Trek?

3) Did the golden age of television produce any sitcom on the level of Seinfeld?

I could really go on but I think I made my (subjective) point.

>Have they done it lately? No.
The Good Wife and Person of Interest were both very good shows (on CBS nonetheless) and they concluded about a year ago.

Not while Game of Thrones is still airing.

It's true, it all stems from Jon Stewart being named the most trusted news source in America back in the day. The powers at be ignored all of the obvious shit that led to that and now think television and movies are where people get their opinions and ideals from.

I'll admit there's a small, easily influenced percentage of the population who does, but they would be influenced regardless. Right now they're funneling a fuck ton of money into Hollywood to sell their agenda, and inflating everyone's egos by telling them they create culture.

I wonder if The Leftovers will get another season in 10 years after it becomes a cult hit in 4-5 years?

Meh most of the good (or decent depending on taste) series are Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Exclusive or Premium channels

>Man in the High Castle
>House of Cards
>Game of Thrones
>The Leftovers
>Twin Peaks (Hopefully)

one of those doesn't belong there

>Man in the High Castle
MUH NAZIS ARE BAD

yes the golden age ended because now everyone is trying into prestige drama like shitty mr robot.

leftovers is gonna be the last good show for a long long time.

You mean they weren't?

The Nazis are actually portrayed positively.

>> Mr. Robot
>> Game of Thrones
>> Halt and Catch fire
>> Humans
>> Vikings
>> Expanse

Implying

While the Nazis do exterminate based on "master race" beliefs, they make it quick and painless.

On the other hand both the Japanese AND the Resistance did significantly more terrible things in the show so far

Hell, in S2 a Nazi is the hero that saves the Japanese States of America from getting nuked out of existance

>1) How many detective shows from this modern era legitimately stack up to Columbo?
True Detective (season 1)
>2) How many science fiction shows from the last decade are actually worth a shit like Star Trek?
Star Trek was shit. If you had said The Twilight Zone I would have agreed.
>3) Did the golden age of television produce any sitcom on the level of Seinfeld?
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

And legion the Americans twin peaks is back Silicon Valley GoT

>Letfovers
That show is garbage. It's a sad state of affairs when people overrate one of the worst shows to ever have been on HBO.

How to detect a fullblown pleb, ie: OP

>finished watching deadwood for the first time a week ago
>tfw still sad that I can't find another good character based show I haven't already watched

Hello rreddito

Leftovers isn't canceled it's ending

say that to my face not online and see what happens

First episode of last man on earth was great, then they ruined it by adding more people to the show.

You're a pleb
A retard who was netted by the garbage specifically designed for mouthbreathers like you

Yes it has

critics shit on every show that doesnt have an obvious leftist political stance, leaving no room for actual artistic expression (unless your art happens to agree with the viewpoint of "the king")

Faggot ass bitch nigger

>The Good Wife

Makes me want to run out and binge watch it immediately but I'll hold off
I'll hold off until the day pigs fly

>le golden le age
reddit as fuck

True patricians know there have only ever been 3 good shows
Mad Men, Sopranos, and The Young pope. Other pleb shit need not apply

Retard

Breaking Bad is terrific.

b2r

Maybe you should stop watching garbage movies

>Lost, Hannibal, and Fringe
were you trying to make an argument for major networks having quality?

>there is someone unironically defending modern GoT on Sup Forums
WHAT
WENT
WRONG

Sigh

Your taste is horrible

There's still some quality but I've a hard time seeing anything even equalling mad men, sopranos or the wire for a long time.

>The Crown
>Leftovers
Young Pope
>Fargo
>Halt and Catch Fire
>Narcos

all passable but it's progressively harder to raise the bar or break new ground. Would appear all media is suffering from this and increasingly easy option cannibalising itself.

>the wire
>comparing to mad men and sopranos
lol.

It started off well but has degenerated quite rapidly season on season since about 3.

The Americans is still on for another season.

GoT went to shit when they made Ramsey die like a bitch.

I can tell from the language and behavior of the posters who praise the Americans that it isn't actually good.

The sex scenes have a negative impact on the ratings if anything. Most people think it's extremely awkward to sit through a porn scene with friends or relatives. You're an idiot.

>GoT went to shit in S6
Yeah try 3 years prior buckaroo

Ramsey died when he fought the Ironborn shirtless.

It is close to dying the last ones are
>Leftovers
>Fargo
>Better Call Saul
After this the golden age is over.

it's a comfy 3rd

Okay. You should probably still watch it, though. It's really good.

BCS is exactly when the Golden Age ended. Blatant attempt to milk a beloved property for cash.

It's an absolute travesty that Walter White is up there instead of Vic Mackey.

non of those shows can be put anywhere near the same tier as the ones in OPs pic dawg

>If you don't think GoT is one of the GOAT shows of this era, you're a retard
It was up to season 4.

BCS is poorly paced basura. People got hoodwinked into assuming its good because of its ties to BB

>
>Explain
You didn't realize how the writing dropped in the last two seasons?

>columbo
>star trek
>seinfeld

...

found the pleb, I bet you didn't like BB seasons 1-3 either
Fargo S2 was trash tho

>every show that ends must be cancelled

>he doesn't watch The Leftovers

This desu senpai.

There's nothing bad with that either, since they can do a 10 part "movie" that could potentially get a second "season". Its fantastic.

>there's actually plebs on Sup Forums who complained about not having to wait a week inbetween episodes

Curb will be back in September user relax.

>Fargo season 2 was bad tho
Who's the REAL pleb here?
Pretentious shite

stop watching anything
