Why does America have huge states like California and Texas with 30million+ population, and then have a bunch of tiny states with just 1-2 million population?
Why not group the smaller states into bigger states, and divide up the bigger states into smaller ones, so that the distribution is more even?

The western states are newer, and that's largely why they're larger. They started out far less populated than they are today. When the state borders were drawn up in the 19th centuries it wasn't a problem, but now it's kind of ridiculous.
