In general the relationship of the west with Gadafi was completely hilarious.
First in the 70's USA blame him of a series of terror attacks in Europe that Syria regime was responsible for. He likes the publicity and far away from denieng this he just plays along. For over decades he was the western's Bogeyman.
Then when the Bush invasion of Irak lost almost any credibility he was lured to officially take responsability for past attacks(when in reality he have nothing to do with them) and destroy his chemical weapones arsenal(when in reality he did not have any). In exchange western countries liftten the economic embargos and promoted Gadafi as a great lider and an example for the arab world.
Then they again turned him into the evil dictator again during the arab spring and sided with the "freedom fighters™" to destroy completely Libya.

He wanted to establish a pan-african currency based on the Libyan gold dinar. It would have been used within the African Union to trade oil and various other resources. It would have probably forced the west to start trading with Africa using gold instead of US$.
I suspect the regime change here was also related to gold. Notice how our production started its second decline around 1994.

Ghaddafi wanted to unite an African Union under a new Dinar, a gold backed currency (So other countries couldn't claim it was valueless) and have African nations trade oil exclusively in that currency, instead of the good old petro dollar.

He kept starting shit with other African countries. He put Libya against Chad (backing muslims against Christians there) and bankrolled the arab-muslim establishment against the south sudanese (who were black and Christian). It is often left out of the history that Gaddafi was himself super-imperialistic. That isn't to say that the issues were handled well by western powers, but the revisionism that tries to play Gaddafi as a misunderstood champion of the little guy.
