They produced an autist son. Bob was a low-energy father and also acquiescent with Barb's demands and mental illness. Chris grew up an only child with no real rearing or guidance and a spoiled brat who was sheltered from consequence by his mother even into adulthood.
Chris would have always been mentally ill, but the abomination he became was a result of his parents' horrible parenting. They deserved him. If Bob had never remarried and just enjoyed a pensioned retirement he'd probably have lived a lot longer and happier.
