Can an American explain the concept of bail bonds? Do criminals pay to get out of jail?

Yes, if the court deems you're likely to show up on your court date and aren't a risk/danger to yourself or others then you can pay to get out of jail until your trial. Trials can take years even for minor crap like assault which is why the option is available. In some cases if you show up to court when you're required to you'll get the money back.

>assault
>minor crap
the absolute state of muttland

What I meant by that is often the trial will be longer than the time you serve if found guilty. Many people plead guilty because they'll get out of jail sooner even if there's no case against them.

Thats fucking shocking, so you can spend weeks or even months behind bars even if found innocent just because you could not afford the bail money?

Yep. :^)

Also don't forget most of our prisons are fucking brutal.

>Can an American explain the concept of bail bonds? Do criminals pay to get out of jail?
they pay to not wait for their trial in jail

it fucks over the poorest of the poor quite often

also have family pay bond, most bond and bail loan offices charge huge amounts of interest, like 70%-80%

if you flee the country or miss a court date then the court keeps your bond, if you show up to every court date, even if found guilty, the court will pay you back the bail after sentencing

just keep $100 in your pocket after a night of drinking and you can bail yourself out if you get arrested for a DUI (assuming the arresting officers dont "lose" your money/evidence on the way to jail)

>Do criminals pay to get out of jail?
most cant afford it

its a nice leftover from Jim Crow laws in the south, and no court wants to get rid of a income source, so it has not been repealed in most states yet

unsuprisingly alabama and mississippi use the bail/bond system the most

...

>cant afford a 5 figure sudden expense
what are you poor?

Company I work for went under last year and no one is hiring where I am, so yeah, I'm fairly tight on money at the moment.

yeah

Where?

my tax dollars at work

The UK also has bail so not sure why it's "fucking shocking" to you.
>just because you could not afford the bail money?
Bail bonds are for people who can't afford bail, you'll put up a high value asset as collateral and the bail bond agency will cover your bail, if you flee then they just collect the collateral.

Prison has nothing to do with bail, jail is where you wait for trial.

Same here

In the UK you don't pay up front, you only pay if you do not turn up. That is why its shocking.

Does the American system have so that paying for bail is the norm and there are no other way a defendant can go on bail?

whatever, the JAILS are fucking brutal. Same difference.

do you get some gibs if you are proven innocent? after all you will most likely lose your job and lot of other things

legal ransom

It´s a civilized way incentivizing those charged with a crime to appear in court, while simultaneously keeping the county jail population down to a minimum.

I see nothing wrong with it. It´s a shame we don´t practice it back here. Trial by jury is another concept our freedom-hating socialist swine government has failed to implement.

*way of incentivizing

no
you also have to pay the jail that kept you a certain amount for every day you were there

it fucks the poor hard

sounds great
any sort of rights that makes it so that they dont lose their job? or that family gets money to survive if they dont earn enough?

Jail isn't prison. Jail is where they hold you while awaiting trial. Prison is where you go once convicted of a crime.

Every day I thank God that I wasn't born in Am*rica

>while simultaneously keeping the county jail population down to a minimum.

You mean arresting a shitload of innocent people on bullshit charges so that they can steal their money for their release? this is called ransom.

none whatsoever
in theory you can refuse to pay the jail fines(because debtors prison is illegal, on paper), but have fun if you ever get pulled over by that police department again....

lolno

>It´s a civilized way incentivizing those charged with a crime to appear in court, while simultaneously keeping the county jail population down to a minimum.
no, its the complete opposite, jails milk every valuable from its inmates that it can

Australia has bail too but we don't have the retarded system of taking out a loan with someone who also undertakes to hunt you down if you don't turn up to court

This is called taxes.
Payment under threat of violence.

taxes benefit the general populace

court fines benefit the judicial branch of government only
>MI in the 6 district with shitty states is suffering
>new englanders can commute south and be in 4 different districts in few hours

at least chicago cant influence my states laws

they pay to get out during the trial, if they dont show up to the trial then the bail is forfited to the state

You don't actually pay that much. That's where bail/bond companies come in.

That's because outrage put them under a microscope, now that can't even do legitimate things.

Night night

Keep your butthole tight
