I like the calarts artstyle and these shows, fuck off you critical memer.

HAHAHAHA MEEEEMEEES.
Now do this with Grunkle Stan, Pearl, Harvey Beaks, Chloe, Ms Baker, and Sylvia and maybe this argument of "all cartoons the same!" would have a point.

hey guys check out my new calarts cartoon its features a buff cat who is totaly into solving mysterys with his gay brother who happend to be a ladybug but he's a guy not a lady hhaha its a running gag within the show hahah so funy i kno any way they live in a shack outside th magic kingdom of treasure land and they help the princess with magic and shit some times its super funny and has a lot of great characters like angry crocodile man and sassy shoelace around 20 episodes in it gets a random backstory and gets super dark and edgy i hope you enjoy it

That artstyle has nothing to do with calarts.

cartoon networks new line up looking fiiiiine

>I hate all current trends!!!

literally wait 5 years

Almost all of these are Nickelodeon pilots. But ever since passing up Phineas and Ferb and Adventure Time, Nick has shamelessly been taking CN's reject pilots and turning them into TV shows.

is this the gumball series finale

OH BOY ITS THIS THREAD AGAIN.

delete this

sorry user, you cannot delete reality.

So has anyone outside of Sup Forums ever criticized Calarts art-style?

>who is John K.
He's the reason that meme even exists.

Really? I wonder if Sup Forums knows that

Oi! Don't lump Tall Tales of Urchin in with this shit.

There's real heart and potential there.

But it's true. All of those are good shows and are the only ones that respect the craft.

I wonder that if you stayed on Sup Forums, the board would be much better

John K's criticism seems different though its more geared toward Disney. Which makes sense as it used to be a school totally sponsored and influence by Disney. I guess you can say that the "CALARTS" style is any style that dominates the entire school.

johnkstuff.blogspot.com/2010/01/cal-arts-style.html

>When cartoonists refer to the "Cal Arts Style" they are talking about this recycled look that is not influenced by life or even other cartoon styles. It is strictly a straight line of inheritance through a few generations starting from somewhere around the "Aristocats". ...Losing important genetic code with each new generation and getting staler and staler.

>It has been blended with 70s Hanna Barbera, Nelvana and Sheridan College in the last 20 years - and even a bit of Spumco, but the basic core of the feeling - soft Disney is Cal Arts.

This rings true for OP as well. "Cal-Arts" is not strictly talking about the school, it's just a general term to refer to "current industry style that originated from the latest batch of graduates of Cal-Arts".

It applies to Steven Universe because Rebecca Sugar used to have a drawing style until she got into TV. Now she draws like every other CalArts student because she's been influenced by them so heavily.

not with that artstyle

and they got Loud House, from a CN alumni, which is way better than either of those pieces of geometric shit.

Maybe not, but have you seen it?

It feels very much like a spiritual successor to Flapjack.

CN doesn't care about their old man talent. That's why they've ditched Craig McCracken, CH Greenblatt, and Gennedy. They're all about going after recent graduates for cheap and for "new, original, out of the box ideas". Why do you think nuPPG is made up almost entirely of artists with no industry experience?

The only reason Gennedy is back is because of nostalgia on Adult Swim's part moreso than actual interest in him as an artist.

i don't think so. Her style is still pretty distinct.

Her self portrait drawings literally look like stuff I see in CalArts graduate portfolios.

Links?

You have to just scour past her reblogs on Tumblr to find her art. Honestly, it's easier just to google "Rebecca Sugar Art" for stuff she's done in the last few years.

this is a very distinct style

sugar did not go to calarts btw

...

>Rebecca Sugar used to have a drawing style until she got into TV
her style hasn't substantially changed since she made "Don't Cry For Me, I'm Already Dead" but you don't even know what that is, do you

Remember when "the CalArts style" was the Milt Kahl style perpetuated by Brad Bird?

I'm guessing they wanted to redeem themselves afrer pushing away Adventure Time.

>but you don't even know what that is, do you
Yeah, I have no idea about her very few pieces she's done outside of Steven Universe. What the fuck is Pug Davis, Singles, or Even Braindead People Can Enjoy Simpsons? Fuck me if I know. Also can you recommend any indie bands? I want only people really underground, you know?

Her organic forms are way less squishy than they were when she graduated college + did those comics. Fuck, just look at the pilot compared to now. The pilot actually looks like pages out of her sketchbook.

half of the beatles are underground

>another "[buzzword] is the reason everything sucks" thread

BEEEAATLES UNDERGRRRROOOOUND
BEAAAATLESSS UNDERGRROOOOOUNNNDDD

CN employees on massive damage control ITT

Sugar had to conform to the low-tier "cal-arts" style to save money. Of course her and Ian would say "HEY THIS CHANGE IS AN IMPROVEMENT!" lest they be fired.

What happened to animation. Is any 5 year old allowed to make a pitch now? Why must they all be happy? A little misery please

> No, user NO!!1! I don't like my fav chars sad and miserable like me, they make me feel better being who they are!!1! ;(((

Because kids cartoons with angry or miserable characters tank in the ratings.

The fact that she-who-must-not-be-named show that was on the same network got 15 times more popular than this one speaks volumes on what people look for in a kids cartoon.

First off, the problem is that CN toons aren't geometric enough.

Secondly, you're seriously using a version of a false flag Sup Forums meme (pic related is commonly used to false flag "sonyggers") associated with phrases like "DELETE THIS" and "ITS NOT FAIR". I don't want this board to become like Sup Forums but it will happen if you keep posting images like this.

My dream is to move to the United States for the sole purpose of studying in CalArts, how fucked am I?

CalArts is a good school and their student shorts are damn fucking good. Second best to Gobelins (Which is unreal levels of professional for students). The problem lies more in studios being aggressive with their in-house style rather than throwing up some variety. But even that can be argued, is that even really a problem? Because CN has a very prominent "studio style" and they're doing quite well in the ratings.

Mabel makes life worth living.

u realize every animated movie you've ever watched was made by cal arts right? the style in the op is the cal arts equivalent of a flick of the pencil to most people.

looks like pilot Pearl

>self-inserting

no shit

Well rebecca has said all the gems are just different parts of herself.

Rebecca sees herself as part strong black woman?

Sure is the Simpson these days.

yes

No they are not, they're cancer.

We need standers.

You need a dictionary.

No, I don't.

This is quality animation.
youtube.com/watch?v=EwJZhPFs9Kw

DOH

Are you implying they're inferior because they have comparable design aspects? Every era of cartons has had sets of tends and stylistic choice that can be traced across a multitude of shows.

>animation done for theatrical shorts when there no was no guild to regulate animator wages

ok.

If you want something newer.
youtube.com/watch?v=s-ji8Oo5q3o

You have any examples from the last decade?

youtube.com/watch?v=RODNLawkA7s

I think that's his point.
>Lupin
My Nigga

His point is that he cherry picks the shit out of his examples to fit his needs. It's like asking why can't all anime have the same animation quality as One Punch Man. Answer: Because the conditions to that show are completely fucking bonkers for industry standard. Not everyone is willing to kill themselves in overtime over a passion project to make it look its very best.

Just because Don Bluth and his crew basically filed bankruptcy just to make Secret of NIHM doesn't mean every filmmaker should just to give small audiences some good ol' 2D animation.

Thank you, I fear for the staff's retirement due to working since the 70s (80s staff is good until 2020 to 2024).

The only good animator on OPM was Hiroyuki Aoyama and he did that at his house.

OPM's overall quality was still higher than the average anime. Japanese studios in general pay their animators per drawing, not per hour, which is why they crank out so many drawings, so they can make a decent living.

They don't have an animation guild like we do where, if people want to put out quality, they basically have to lie on their timesheets which means they won't get paid for all that juicy animation you want so bad. And a lot of people would like to live decently and pay bills without killing themselves over it, so they're not going to do it unless they REALLY love the project. Plus TV shows don't have big budgets to begin with, so they can't just throw overtime pay at their employees like feature film studios can. Not to mention it's pretty hard to supervise your animators when they're across the globe in a different timezone from you.

Maybe learn basic things about the industry before bitching that the quality isn't very good.

TMS I know pays per hour, KyoAni between 2007-2013 as well.

Low end studios pay per drawing but the higher end ones pay per hour and Japan has JAniCA.

It's South Korea that lacks a guild to the point that lower end studios and pre-strike Mir were getting payed per foot, Rough Draft and post-strike Mir do get payed per hour however (Rough Draft pays more however).

>post made less than an hour ago

I still have the comedic timing on my side:

I know one strong black part of her
Ian's dick.

I think she's said that Garnet is the cool side she wishes she had

You're not wrong. Sugar has said that Garnet being a fusion is suppose to represent her and Ian being an interracial couple. I only assume that's why Ruby looks really close to KO from Lakewood Plaza.
