were the Journey to the West and Jackie Chan references in Dragonball supposed to be appealing?

Becky Sucrose is a hack

they arent references if the show is based on them

Literally every single boarder they have just copies shit from anime because it's what they grew up with

Yes, quit asking

I just hope that one day you will grow up enough to realize that every piece of media you consume was created by people who have ALSO consumed media in the past, and as such they draw upon it in their own creations.

Sometimes it's more obvious than others, but it's always there. Maybe it's something you couldn't even recognize. But that's okay. You don't need to be angry all the time.

Absolutely disgusting

I hope they stop doing all these references and try being more original with their interesting scenes.

Sometimes it's homage due to respect but a lot of the time it's an animator referencing something they worked on before as an inside joke.

Are any references supposed to be appealing?

sounds more like she's living the dream.

>I want to make a cartoon filled with my lesbian and straight shota fetishes, anime references galore, and music.
>She's loved by a lot of people for it

Sugar, if nothing else, you've given us all hope some people can live the dream with their cartoons.

a moment of silence for cartoonists who were crushed by the industry. Their smiles and optimism gone for good.

It's to appeal to anime watchers and create a fake sense of belonging and "this was made for me" effect.

Similarities are to be expected between products of fiction and influence is to be expected too but when it becomes a routine it just shows the lack of the creators to create unique scenery and moments and instead having to rely on pre-existing works.

I really like this parody Nappa.

>it just shows the lack of the creators to create unique scenery and moments and instead having to rely on pre-existing works.
This

Well there are only so many ways someone can do something to inflict the right kind of feelings in the audiene.
Here we have leaving the pod. of course we could have had a kick to open it or they jump out or what ever, but everything has been done before and we should more like how artisticly good or bad it was made.

>/ss/
>anons are actually stupid enough to think this is an actual part of the show's subtext and not just shipping cancer and porn fantasizing

>they aren't references if I like them

this is like Zack Snyder using religious imagery to paint Superman as Jesus

actually it's worse because at least in the movie it had the purpose of making us compare Superman to Jesus but in this case it's just a visual reference that holds nothing.
It's just utterly pointless, nothing would have changed if it wasn't there.

>Only original shots are good.

who cares? dbz sucks ass anyway

It's because this show is supposed to resonate with people who grew up with shows like DBZ, or grew up with anime because of things like Toonami.

Steven as a character is pretty much a 90s kid, and has the same wide-eyed wonder and innocence that a lot of middle-class children in the 90s had, and she's trying to recapture a period in a lot of 20something neckbeard's lives where they actually *liked* something unironically.

She has a brother who is literally that 90s kid who she draws inspiration from.

No, dragonball is literally based on journey to the west you absolute mong.
Son wukong's magical staff, the monkey tail (son wukong is monkey), the "somersault cloud" son wukong uses to travel "great distances in a single leap."

If you don't see the parallels there you are dense as they come.

Jasper is going to be redeemed but Yellow Diamond is going to shatter her Gem.

Steven will then go full SSJ2 Gohan vs Cell on her ass.

I wish. Steven is way more pacifist than Gohan.
Then again, we still haven't seen Stevonnie in action; who knows what Connie's influence will result in

>Not wanting to make your own Sup Forums series and packing it filled with shots and references taken from your favorite movies and series
Why?

>Steven gets uncomfortable about Connie's aggressive influence and breaks the fusion mid-fight

If you're a nostalgic weeaboo

Maybe if they were in a show that wasn't shit like SU.

Are they off-putting?

Who the fuck is resonating with badly drawn remakes of 80s anime scenes?

Because blatent references are the same as using memes when it comes to writing.

You're not being creative or witty. You're using other people's work to make up for your lack of writing skill.

The episode was still great.

No not really. Memes used in TV Shows are often used as comedy material. This is just a fun little reference that most people wouldn't have recognized unless pointed out.

>using memes
you're using the word meme wrong
cultural references to things ARE memes, literally, by definition
Vice versa, using memes are just internet specific references

stop getting your panties so twisted, it doesn't matter if you're not creative or witty if you're being funny and entertaining
>b-b-but I'M not being entertained
have you considered that you're not the target audience, ie, someone who enjoys references

Animator Lauren Zuke was literally a NEET drawing porn and playing WoW all day and Sucrose hired her. That's why I admire Steven Universe, it's made by a bunch of /y/ and /u/-fags living their dream.

>What is intertextuality?

You apparently do not understand that anime frame references=/= unoriginal content.

leave it up to a gook to reference tons of anime in their shitty cartoon

>YD is intrigued by Steven's ability to fuse with a human
>Homeworld starts creating new clusters by kidnapping humans and force fusing them with gem shards

And some of Sup Forums couldn't be more salty about it.

>Sugar, if nothing else, you've given us all hope some people can live the dream with their cartoons.
>a moment of silence for cartoonists who were crushed by the industry. Their smiles and optimism gone for good.

You mean like the korean animators of SU?

I don't mind some references/homages and I'm not even shitting on SU specifically, but it does feel lazy as fuck when you can point to multiple times something's been referenced during dramatic moments (so it doesn't have the excuse of just being for comedy or whatever) instead of trying to create its own iconic moments/shots in those same instances.

Sometimes they're pretty fucking great

it's literally a late 90's/early 00's "epic story" webcomic with a few million more dollars budget and some writers who don't suck ass

literally who cares, it wasn't even a serious episode

I liked it.

I thought the episode was really good.

And honestly its not like Sugar tries to hide the fact that the show includes alot of referneces to her favorite anime/TV shows. She does it cause she made the show for her brother and its a memento to the shows the spent watching together when they were kids.

It just makes me want to watch DBZ over SU.

Let's put like this. Tangled is not making a reference to Rapunzel, Tangled IS a version of Rapunzel. The same thing is Dragonball and a Journey to the West.

The only time they show ever went overboard was this scene.

youtube.com/watch?v=IFIzpaurSGM

Besides, SU is FAR from the first CN show that has a lot of anime shout outs.

>tfw the people who applauded Liebowitz for holding up that sign call trump hitler

this

Yeah I too loved that part in Journey to the West where aliens invade Earth and Son Goku has to train to beat them up. Or that other time where androids disrupt the World Martial Arts Tournament and a bug-creature made by a mad scientist almost destroys the world.

No you fucking idiot, Journey to the West is not ANYTHING like Dragon Ball, and especially Dragon Ball Z. Tangled works because it keeps the core plot elements and characters of Rapunzel, IE: A girl with supernatural hair is rescued from a tower by a dashing man and they fall in love. Journey to the West is about a dickhead immortal Monkey King who steals the treasures of the heavens being punished by the Buddha, freed by a monk, and learning respect, humility, and the meaning of morality on a religious pilgrimage. For fuck's sake, there are porn mags that have stories that are closer to the original Journey to the West than Dragon Ball Z. Even the original Dragon Ball was only connected to Journey to the West in the name of the protagonist, even if it's thematically closer (A young powerful boy learns responsibility) and uses similar imagery (Young boy with a staff and a monkey tail who sometimes goes on destructive rampages). Dragon Ball was about a kid and his young female side-kick preventing people like Emperor Pilaf and the Red Ribbon Army from getting a wish granting plot device. It's at it's core a comedy/action series, where Journey to the West is a religious drama. They're not even in the same genre, let alone different versions of the same story.

>y-you can't say it's b-bad. it wasn't made for you!

See. This is why the show is in the shitter and losing out to TTG reruns.
