I was in the military for ten years as an officer. It's the biggest social experiment in that regard as enlisted are all highschool educated and officers are all university educated. Intelligence and education are not very correlated, it's essentially a divide between rural (can get $80k jobs out of highschool) or urban (can't get a starbucks job without a degree).
Most officers I knew couldn't change a tire or fix a leaky faucet. Just because someone studied art or social issues for four years doesn't mean they're any more intelligent than someone who was fixing cars or operating a $40m pumpjack.
