Is Alex Ross the greatest comic book artist of all time?

>MUH STATUES

I thought DCfriends all masturbated to Jim Lee's stale work.

>What would you do if the justice league watch you fap to lolis.

its a matter of opinion

MEANWHILE, AT THE HALL OF KLAN JUSTICE

He's not even the best comic book artist named Alex (that would be Alex Toth or Alex NiƱo, BTW, either answer is acceptable).

No, I feel like he's not even the best super hero comic artist.

He's not the best at telling a story with pictures, but he is one of the best at creating breathtaking pinups.

At the very least I don't think he's overrated. His work is truly impressive.

He can't draw Captain Marvel without making him look like a cunt

Too realistic.

Great artist, terrible comic book artist

His figure drawing is pretty good. I'm not sure he's that great at laying things out on a page. Like in US or Kingdom Come, some pages work pretty well, some less so. I'm never really blown away by him though. He has his photo realistic niche though.

Also like all painters in comics he has an amazing sense of color, but yeah I'm always less impressed by his actual comic art than I am by his covers

I also just don't like the comics he has worked on, too nostalgic for my taste

I'm weird about Ross because I think he IS talented and good at what he does, but I don't like this photo realistic style and it kind of falls apart outside of pretty covers and montages.

I like my comic art to have a bit more "toony" to them, I don't know why yet but that's what it is.

I've been masturbating to Jim Lee's work since he did X-Men.

I think Ross has some great work. It's just that his most well-known things are some of his worst.

Something like U.S. (or Uncle Sam) is all the evidence you need that he's a great comic book artist.

Me too.

>since he did X-Men
plebs, I'm been masturbating since he was on The Punisher

No.

Who is this?

King Kirby.

Kirby

It's amazing to me how well Simonson emulated Kirby's style. Maybe for better or for worst but Simonson was truly the heir to the Kirby throne.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of most of his work (not a huge fan of superheroes or photorealism in comics) but anybody who has tried to do figure drawing can't deny that he's great at naturalistic depictions of the human body, drapery/textures, and lighting. He's as skilled and talented a technician as we've seen in the superhero comics industry.

I do think that his naturalistic style occasionally detracts from his work in his preferred genre, though. Sometimes his superheroes just look like guys in cheap cosplay.

>Sometimes his superheroes just look like guys in cheap cosplay.

Exactly. You nailed it.

No, the greatest is frank cho, maybe deodato.

He's great but I dig him more as a cover artist. I can't say I'm a fan of reading an entire book in that style. I'm not sure why

Who?

Dave Stevens
Steve Rude
Nestor Redondo
Art Adams

All better. Among others.

no

this is actually pretty good

Mignola also has some heavy Kirby influences

imho Kirby, Frank Miller and Moebius are the kings

This is probably the best single piece of art Jim Lee ever did.

It's a shame he doesn't draw porn...imagine if he did.

Lee ruins his work with too much hatching and an overly scratchy style. His fondness for glossy colors doesn't help either.

Styles that lean more toward the cartoony side do a better job of conveying movement and emotion.

What good is photorealism when you can just look at real porn?

I don't understand why you can't call him what he specifically is: a painter. Painting is a different medium from other comic book artist's methods. Just because he's a great painter doesn't mean he's the greatest comic book artist.

Huh. I never thought about that before but it does make sense.

Look up Barry Windsor-Smith and then tell me that.
