There is a rumor in the spanish speaking community, that voter registration information is being used to find illegal immigrants for deportation. The snowden leaks, that confirmed the use of meta data by government departments is used as proof.
Many new immigrants from latin america come from regimes that are corrupt and would do something like this. Even if a story came out that explicitly says this is not true, the mere mention of it will give it credibility.
