When you combine it with crime you end up with a field so complex that no meaningful argument can be made from statistics, because statistics proving any argument can easily be manufactured. In the absence of perfect information we can only do the right as we see the right. I believe that fit and proper people ought to be able to make effectual self defence, and carry firearms to that effect. I believe that not everybody is a fit and proper person. I believe a regime ought to exist to ensure that only fit and proper people carry firearms for self defence. I do not believe it is productive to place the people in opposition to the government and try and construct laws around a society you acknowledge doesn't exist.
