People who get buttmad about the math that common core teaches don't have any understanding of math beyond the basic algorithms they were taught. Common core math is actually a great way to teach basic math as it gives students a better amount of intuition and understanding of what they're doing.

american schools for most of history have been about memorizing steps.

for example "carrying the remainder" is a procedural step, its not actually how you divide or subtract, conceptually. Its a trick, or a shortcut.

Common core teaches the concept of numerical patterning in a binary way, which is much more fundamental and useful for things like Calculus, and Computer Science, where as procedural math is more useful for accounting and factory jobs.

Im sure this "engineer" did a lot of memorizing to pass diffy Q and then never did any more real math.

The problem at the top explains how to break up the numbers into decimal binary form and reapply them in sets of 10's according to their decimal place. This is conceptually way easier that memorizing tricks and struggling when the numbers are around 20-90, as children do.

They obviously don't explain this to the teachers or the children because the mechanics don't matter to a 5 year old.

What they're trying to do actually makes sense- they're teaching how to do math by divide and conquer which is a good method and something kids should learn. However, they're doing it in the dumbest way possible because these aren't methods you use on something like your math homework, they're methods you'd use at a store trying to do quick math with no calculator or paper/pencil.

If you want to teach that shit, it should be mostly verbal. No pencil, no paper, no devices otherwise it's just going to be some pointless exercise the kid won't retain or have a clue what to do with.

But you can't put that on a standardized test and our current education system isn't equipped to teach things that you can't easily stick on a form.

theres also the fact that a lot of elementary and high school teachers are stick in the muds that know dick about their subjects and are holding people back from actually implementing real changes. They want to keep teaching the way they memorized things because thats all they know and going to another seminar or conference to relearn a whole new curriculum is not something most of them are interested in and most school districts are underfunded so they cant just fire them and get new teachers.

However there is a difference between standardize, and FORCE a specific view or method, which many poorly prepared teachers are doing (then again poorly prepared teachers would fuck stuff up anyways)

Common Core is less than ideal because it sets a static standard for a dynamic problem. What may be good for the students of Oregon may not be good for the students of Kentucky. Rather than setting some students up for failure and holding others back by creating a federal standard, allowing states to have more control over their education system allows for a more detailed system that caters to the local schools instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

Go to your local elementary school, sign in as a visiting taxpayer and you want to see what your tax dollars are funding. Very easy.

the chinese approach is the grinding approach. The reason they're so good AT MATH is that they do excessive exercise, and that's also the reason why spoiled kids are so subpar at math. The master approach wouldn't work if you fell short for high requirements due to lack of work. The chinks are very dedicated in memorizing techniques and wisdoms.

On paper it's good but it doesn't work out well irl. I had to take it from 8th grade to senior year and it was horrible. The main problem is that the teachers don't decide what they have to teach. The supervisors and board members have to and 90% of the time they don't know how teaching works. They make something that takes a week to teach and stretch it out for 3. One time my teacher had to teach 2 weeks worth of stuff in 4 days. They also have no concept of how to review past things. For our final they include everything from past years but don't tell you what and most of the time it's the smallest most irelevant shit. So we have to cram 5 years worth of math into a couple of weeks of review and study.aybe it would work if the people making it knew how to teach but for now its retarded

This. In my senior year and we have these's things called springboard. It's written by college students and has a shit ton of flaws

its non common core shit with mental calculations, like the good ol days, again if CC teaches kids to think like this and they end up doing complex calculations in their minds only, then I'm all for it

but then on their tests they would have to do complex calculations in their minds and I dont see them doing that. Kids here use calculators for everything now, they cant do addition of 3 digit numbers without screwing up
