I have an IQ of 143, I'm off to the naval academy and am going to use my marine service to help me run for public office after I'm done with my desk job. Joining the service is more useful than going to fucking law school or anything else in my case.

A lot of us weren't "too dumb" to get into college, but rather didn't want to take out student loans to pay for an education at some mid tier college, when we could get a job for four years, then have our higher education paid for at a high tier university.

Smarter move is to go to college, join as an officer, go to officer training, get any debts from college erased and apply for AFIT for a masters in whatever you want, or they'll send you somewhere else to get it.

Being at the Academy allows you certain opportunities that others aren't usually allowed. While I was at West Point I went all over Europe through military training exercises, got to go to Korea, and got to intern at Los Alamos.

Plus the Academies are pretty well known nationally. Just about everywhere I've been I've met people that had a friend/family member that went to an Academy. I got to personally meet senators and congressmen because of West Point as well. Sure, you can do that going to a normal school but I would imagine it's much more difficult.

A poorly written letter on an obscure website isn't going to disrupt the media cycle that's bitching Turmp out on this.

Meh, I see what you're saying, but you can do study abroad and have way more fun than being forced to do training exercises for most of your time overseas. I still don't see any real point in going to any of the academies besides trying to have some sort of prestige you can lord over people, especially other officers.

You oversimplify the matter. I'm NG infantry. Was deployed a month out of OSUT.

Without a deployment you pretty much have to depend on the state for tuition. It varies by state. Funding is dried up for mine.

If you don't deploy you can get reserve Montgomery gi, but it is nowhere near the level of post 9/11

Our annual training is 3 weeks a year. Drills are monthly.

It can be a good gig, but don't think its a free ride

I'm not trying to say thats how every contract will play out, but it is definitely possible to not deploy in a 6 year contract and either way with the GI bill you're still getting paid to go to school. My state has been good about education funds, so that's never been a problem for me. Our AT is 2 weeks and we have about 5 MUTA 6's a year.
