But how about this: in our current system of resource extraction and consumption, the ability to recycle materials is near null and what we do recycle is used so inefficiently as to be irrelevant. It is a reasonable assumption that as time goes on: recycling will become far more efficient. The only things that aren't recyclable are agricultural goods (which obviously don't need to be recycled, and can be produced in near-endless cycles) and coal and oil (obviously there are others but I'm cutting this post short). Oil and coal consumption will drop rapidly in the wake of nuclear, solar and wind energy being stored in actually reasonable batteries (which don't exist yet, but it's only a matter of time). Metals/minerals will be recycled with great efficiency. And with the advance of technology the gap will be filled by superior mining/scanning/appropriating measures developed over time. And for the foreseeable future extraction and production costs will drop as a result of the automation revolution that is speeding up all around us.
Except thermodynamics says that there's only so much recycling that can be done when it comes to energy. That's the 2nd law. The fact is, that regardless of what the prices are doing in the market, the costs of extracting energy are going up.
Right now, oil is the lynch pin commodity. You can't haul goods with a wind turbine, you need diesel or gasoline for most shipping needs. Coal doesn't do well in a fuel tank either. We have built our economy on cheap energy, and more specifically cheap oil. There is only so much people can afford when it comes to oil costs.
