indian owned INS Viraat (was called HMS hermes) arrives in Kochi for decommissioning refit.
The oldest aircraft carrier in the world sailed for the last time under her own power from Mumbai and will spend about a month and half getting critical equipment removed before being towed back to Mumbai for the decommissioning ceremony.
The carrier has served two countries and has fought in the Falklands war under the Royal Navy's banner following which she was again mobilized during Op Parakram
dont rest easy yet argies...some bigger better ones with even more of a curvy ramp is on their way ;^)

Ski ramps are better for launching STOVL planes like the F-35B. Us Marine Corp pilots literally came buckets when flying from the Invincible class. Ramps mean; less fuel used, able to take off in rougher seas and loaded with more armaments when compared to the same planes taking off from flat tops without the use of Catobar.
Catobar is expensive and complex (the British should know as they invented the technology), without using nuclear power and cats the QE class is able to reduce the crew compliment from 1000's to 100's, which is important to a nation the size of the United Kingdom (65million vs Americas 350 million) By reducing cost The Royal Navy can afford two carriers of the class, when catobar was in the table France was going to buy the other one but pulled out over the nuclear power issue and their own defence cuts. By using conventional power the Royal Navy will have one at sea at all times, unlike nuclear powered carriers which need 3.5 carriers to have 1 available at all times, America has 10 nuclear carriers for an available 2.5 currently, while Gerald R Ford is being built.

Tbh, the thing will be blown to bits before the aircraft can use up that extra on the payload.

I'm well aware that modern missile tech has basically made the carrier an obsolete piece of hardware But that applies to skiramp carriers too, and only when going head to head against other sufficiently advanced militaries. Payload makes a huge difference when bombing mud people.

For Britain's size and for real full on country on country combat the ramp system is most optimal.
Small amount of aircraft means only a small carrier is needed when bombing dune-coons. Also if actual naval combat would to happen, it wont mean shit, since the carrier is cheaper due to the design.
Since we are cheap.

Doesn't make sense for an aircraft carrier. Even less sense for a navy with only two. The carrier has to be supplied with aviation fuel anyway - why not refuel the ship at the same time? Also if it was nuclear there would be times we would only have a single carrier or potentially none available during refueling. Which is catastrophic.

Two of you most advanced aircraft (at the time Soviet equipment destroyed them).
Also, the US lost several thousands of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft in Korea and Vietnam - all destroyed by Soviet missiles (SAM and AAM) and AAA.
>tens of thousands of flight hours
Really? Tens of thousands of flight hours over hostile ground monitored by Soviet AAA/SAM? What a load of shit. So, the F117 spend more than 19,000 hours flying over Soviet AAA/SAM. Care to post one source that states exactly that?
