Most movies are trying to do this these days. Check out the original pitch for ghostbusters 2016 for the most ridiculous example. All the money's in the cinematic universe model these days. They're trying to make movies more like episodic content than complete self-contained experiences.

Star Wars isn't an expanded universe. You can watch all their films in a chronological order. Unlike the MCU which has a bunch of different franchises active at the same time
