The Weimar Republic was a failed state based on a lost war, total economic collapse and hostile occupation. They had right wing/left wing death squads and existed in a permanent stae of upheaval. The only reason the Nazis got into power was because Germans were terrified of the ongoing soviet/communist take-over in their country. The Nazis successfully marketed themselves as a bulwark against communism.

I'm pretty confident that if German communists had prevailed, a communist Germany would have still managed to incite WW2 and kill just as many people as the Nazis. Only this time with gulags instead of concentration camps and capitalists/business owners instead of Jews.

Weimar Germany was a nation facing a crippling depression that was not only global in scope but particularly hard on Germany due to the devastation hoisted upon it from World War One. The country was literally in shambles during the Weimar years, which is why Hitler rose to power so easily.

Compare to United States now. I won't deny there are and we're economic difficulties, and that a portion of the nation turned to someone with extreme methods to solve them, but that's about where the simularities end. The Recession was nowhere near as damaging as The Depression, Trump is nowhere near as dangerous as Hitler, and the American political system, fractured as it may be, is in now way in the disarray it was in during post WW1 Germany.

Has anyone here actually read a book about the Wiemar Republic? I know its synonymous with decadence but it seems to me that a good deal of that is people taking 1930's Nazi talking points at face value. The Nazi's portrayed themselves as being a champion of traditional values so it only makes sense that they would portray their opponents as being antithetical to that.

More or less this. Direct comparisons of 2017 America to Weimar Germany don't hold up that well for a number of reasons, but the largest is that Germany was a tinderbox at that point in time while the US currently isn't. Politically motivated shitflinging on Twitter does not a civil war make.

Germany had been the second biggest economy after the US since the 1880s despite Great Britain still owning half the world. That's not a fluke. Germans have a strange ability to rebuild extremely quickly. The government was largely stable until the great depression. Had Hindenburg not appointed Hitler as chancellor things would have eventually balanced out and the Nazis wouldn't have fucked Germany's shit up.

My argument wasn't that there hasn't been degeneracy in the past, clearly if one is drawing parallels to past degeneracy this can't be the case. Its the fact that the majority of people didn't engage in it. I was mostly speaking of christendom, but even from an ancient perspective, the average person wouldn't. The deviant shit is perpetuated by the elite or urbanites in general, but the way history is documented and popularized, this is given an overly weighted emphasis, despite being an excitedly small percentage of the population. Majority includes farmers and tradesmen, not just the individuals history popularizes.

And, again, the spirit of the initial post was to combat the fucking idiotic notion that the only people who rail against degeneracy are those who are excluded from participating in it, which is patently false. Monasteries and the general chastity among the spouses of the past are evidence its entirely within one's abilities to not engage in the behavior.
