That's another thing! The movie's trying to be serious and dramatic, but they also have these cartoon-y moments that don't really fit the tone. They might as well made this live-action, and not an animated movie

I only read the book but I definitely preferred the first half that combined a child-like innocence and an insider pov of the Iranian culture shift.
I wasn't particularly impressed either, especially after the praise that got heaped on it. I feel like a lot of Persepolis' success is because it came at a time when the west was trying to "understand" Islam and Muslims and because it was a story that showed how they could just be normal people. Now of course ISIS and rapefugees have destroyed all dialogue and understanding.
It's not really anything special, just a biography of someone who lived in interesting times rather than actually being an interesting person themselves, but it was just the right book / film at the right time. I can also see it being more of interest for people who know nothing about the history of Iran and learn something from it, however I was interested in politics and history and it didn't really teach me anything I didn't already know.

My wife is Iranian and she wanted to watch this movie with her family. During the scene where the uncle gets arrested my father in law shrugged and said something about how the commies were planning to do that to everyone else and what goes around comes around, really I think the constant lionizing of communists and their retarded beliefs pissed him off more than anything else in the movie.

There isn't some huge block of pacifist Muslims out there hiding in the shadows. Muslim's model their life after Mohamed's which was violent and aggressive. There are some sects that are more peaceful towards non-Muslims, but these sects are often targeted by the more traditional majority with violence.
