My sister has a couple horses. She spends about $400 a month to have them stabled and fed. She can afford it but when the horses get sick or injured is when the cost sky rockets. She literally spent $2600 one month when her horse was sick plus another $1200 the next month when her other horse was sick. Then one of them died and she had to pay $600 for it to be removed from the property lol. Most girls that are into horses spend money to have them stabled or on a ranch, then only ride the horses maybe once every 2 or 3 months. I've dated a girl into horses and she only rode maybe 4 times a year but paid a shit ton on saddles and other shit she would never use.

Why are horses so expensive? I know they probably eat a lot, plus owning a place big enough and adequate to ride them is also a privilege for the wealthy, but is there something else to it?

Horse owner and cavalry reenactor here. Horse women are very much a mixed bag. Generally you have two extremes: the rich snooty ones who look down on you, and the redneck white trash ones, who are coarse and don't care that much for their horses. Horse chicks are fucking insane. If their husbands are pushovers, they often get into huge financial trouble because the cost of boarding / feeding / medical care etc for the horses is insanely expensive, and these chicks never look at things from a financial or logical perspective. They will go through great lengths to keep their unjustifiably expensive 1 - 2 time a month hobby. They'd rather they and their family live in squalor and debt than to sell the fucking horses and get a cheaper hobby.
