You will be decent in Hyde park near the university. Public transit is fine, just stay aware of your surroundings, no headphones, etc. go with friends if you can.

Which university? Anywhere that is a cta bus away from a ghetto like englewood can have issues. University of Chicago is like dalaran in wow where the rest is shit by it. UIC is similar with Pilsen but that shit is getting gentrified

THe safest you could possibly be while still being in city limits would be Edgebrook and Wildwood.
Then again, it's a pain in the ass to go anywhere.

Prepare for decently high taxes.
The CTA is the best way to get around the city because loltraffic.Just don't get on a train past 35th on the Red Line. You can take it when your drunk, and as long as you keep your wits somewhat about you, you'll be fine.
We have more hotdog stands than McDonald's, Burger Kings, and Wendy's combined. And for good reason, too. Our hot dogs are wonderful.
Ask a local about their preferred stand, and they'll generally give you a good one.
If you ever want to do anything on the Mag Mile, be aware that there are somethimes "wildingd", basically mini chimpouts, where black teenagers like to punch tourists and steal small shit from them. Haven't had one in a while, but just be aware.
If you want to go hiking, then the three best places are gonna be at least 2 hours away, and those are Starved Rock, Devil's Lake, and the Indiana Dunes.

It depends on what you want.
DO you want to be able to get onto the highway quickly with minimal traffic getting there? Then it sucks.
Do you not have a car and only take the CTA? Then it suits your needs.
I'm honestly looking at Bridgeport. it's away from cucks, there are still some of the old timers there, good food, Chinatown is nearby, and I can visit my cousins in Canaryville.
Speaking of that, if you ever want to see what Chicago was like in the old days, visit Canaryville. It's the last bastion of white ethnic enclaves in Chicago.

Not a good idea, that's starting to get seedy. North side is being gentrified and is very nice ever since they took down Cabrini. Most city workers (Cops, clerks, firemen) live in Edison and Norwood since they are typically the nicer neighborhoods with a strong suburban vibe to them.

I got ripped off buying some vintage jewelry, we went to a giant candy shop, got some mexican food in an area that now seems slightly dangerous.

When I think about it, we didn't really get to do much. We were there with a friend and that friend and my husband were there for a concert. We had our son, who at the time was just over a year old.

Chicago is a tourists wet dream. But I would never want to live there.

Not this. In chicago, certain areas are pretty good, like the north and south loops. But once you get out of the main tourist areas, the difference is noticed block(s) by block(s). I live in uptown. bad area in certain parts, college rich kids in others, and they are right next to each other. On another note, ILDOT's train procurement has gone awry.

Illinois, along with California, are part of the Next Generation Equipment Pool Committee, or NGEC. Both agreed to buy the same locomotives and passenger cars in order to get maintenance costs down. ILDOT chose the Siemens Charger built in Sacramento California. They're being built and will be delivered on time (next year).

California of chose Nippon-Shayro as the car builder, based out of Rochelle (see how this works). A year ago NS's prototype car failed an important FRA crash test last year and got a red stamp, which added +2 years to the procurement. Federal money for this runs out in December, when the last cars were supposed to be delivered. Due to how all this stuff works IL will likely have to pay for California's order (which will get built first) through 2018. Nobody knows where the money for this is going to come from. Also NS can charge whatever they want now, since they're locked in as the vendor.

This also fucks up Chicago's plans for high speed rail to St. Louis, which is almost completed. However, the state doesn't have enough passenger cars for the extra service they want to add. They're basically going to sit on their new track for ~3ish years until NS can build a federally compliant car. In the meantime, the current fleet of 60s-era Amfleets will continue to deteriorate.

On the bright side though, at least the cars can't be imported. Which is a thing ILDOT suggested but the feds said no to.
