There are people that actually enjoy it still, but I think you are on the right track there. Propably 50 % of the sales goes to making funny youtube videos. Might actually go into surströmming business myself.

I'm a young American who loves fermented fish, but I can't make a defense for surstromming. It's far from the best and takes too long to set up. Not worth it.

I've tasted Rakfisk in Norway, I heard it's pretty close to surstromming and it was actually quite good.

It's not disgusting. A large percentage of people north of Stockholm eat it at least once a year and enjoy it.

It's kinda bad, to pickle the herring or smoke it is a better use of the fish imo whether it's the baltic or regular one doesn't matter.
In some parts it's a meme food but not everywhere.
